The shipment was destined for Afghanistan but was to make a stopover in Russia, according to a media report. Authorities arrested 13 people following the drug seizure. To date, apart from Velasquez, no other official Venezuelan government source has commented on the seizure. The last time Maiquetia Airport was involved in such a large volume shipment was in , when French authorities seized 1. While this is not the first time Maiquetia Airport has been used in attempts to export cocaine to unusual foreign destinations, sending such a large shipment to a country like Afghanistan could be a cover for other lucrative drug trafficking routes to Asia. However, its role in the drug trade has changed substantially in recent years. The collapse in the opium market has given rise to new dynamics, such as the increase in trafficking of locally manufactured methamphetamines , with record seizures in Europe and Asia. Although Afghanistan has a history of drug trafficking, this is the first time a cocaine shipment from Latin America to Afghanistan has been recorded. Speaking to InSight Crime, Vanda Felbab-Brown, an organized crime expert and senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, said that using Afghanistan as a cocaine destination seems like a diversionary maneuver to ensure the arrival of shipments to other emerging destinations. On the other hand, the researcher points out that, if there is an interest in moving three tons of drugs to the Asian market, Turkey and Russia — where the flight would have a stopover — would be safer options with better connections to Venezuela for this type of operation. Both nations have established networks and specialized criminal organizations that guarantee more reliable transit. On the map of alternative destinations that have departed Venezuela, Turkey has positioned itself as an option to common destinations such as Europe and North America, where state surveillance and interdiction have led international organizations to seek new drug corridors. Among the 18 detainees who participated in that criminal enterprise was a second sergeant of the GNB assigned to the Special Anti-Drug Unit of the Airport. Another of the most renowned cases is linked to the accusations of Sedat Peker, a mafia boss of Turkish origin, who accused Erkam Yildirim — son of former Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim — of making several visits to Venezuelan soil with the aim of opening a new transnational drug transport line between South America and Turkey. That's what I thought when I got on the plane to Venezuela. But it did - I got caught. Caught smuggling half a million euros' worth of cocaine, Paul Keany was sexually assaulted by Venezuelan anti-drugs officers before being sentenced to eight years in the notorious Los Teques prison outside Caracas. There he was plunged into a nightmarish world of coke-fuelled killings, gun battles, stabbings, extortion and forced hunger strikes until finally, just over two years into his sentence, he gained early parole and embarked on a daring escape from South America. Aided by his extensive prison diaries, Keany reveals the true horror of life inside Los Teques: a shocking underworld behind bars where inmates pay protection money to stay alive, prostitutes do the rounds and vast amounts of cocaine are smuggled in for cell-block bosses to sell on to prisoners for huge profits. The Cocaine Diaries is a remarkable story, told by Keany with honesty, courage and even humour, despite knowing that every day behind bars might have been his last. Paul Keany was a successful self-employed plumber until the Irish property crash in An aspiring novelist, he has turned his back on the murky world of drug-smuggling to focus on a life of writing. A book of profound disappointment at the treatment of humans in this world. The story leaves you with your jaw dropping at times as it seems to be too heinous to be true. What an absolute shower of shit of a place for people to be sent to serve out their punishment behind bars granted they did deserve some level of punishment but to absolutely disregard human rights to this level. Absolutely bloody disgusting! A powerful and painful read. I'm glad Paul and most of his 'gringo' buddies have managed to escape and move on with their lives. Saw the book at the airport on our holiday. Back home I was searching for a german version but didn't found it. So I had to buy the original English Version and accepted the challenge to read and understand a book that's not written in german. After the first pages I was totally into the book and the language. It is exciting, you can really feel the person in the story. I definitely will read it again in the future! A really good insight into prison life within a Venezuelan prison. Some of the stories are quiet unbelievable for all law abiding citizens. Definitely worth a read. I always thought that if you did the crime than you do the time. And, if your in another country then you just have to deal with their justice system. Well, I think that the justice system is a joke and just as corrupt if not corrupter than the country Venezuela. It is very hard to imagine the horrific events that unfolded in the story and to come out alive and tell the story to us who are used to our cocoon of goodness. The biggest joke I thought was the family visits with sleep overs and discos. I can see how all the rest can happen. As inhumane as it was. I have no doubt in my mind the low acts that the guards would go to; especially to foreigners. And, the hierarchy on inmates and the volatile way that matters where dealt with. However, why would anyone ever want to sleep in a prison willingly knowing what sort of people are housed there - murderers, rapists, etc. To sleep on an inmates bed. The conjugal nature of the visits and the frivolity that was going on was just ludicrous. More than 2 years of living this crime committed by the Venezuelan government was worse than the actual crime committed. I wonder if anything has changed. I doubt it. The only think that I didn't like about this book was the start. I felt that it went around in circles a bit with the airport. Bravo to Paul who wrote all this down in jail to be able to accurately tell us. What an experience none of us want to ever have. It doesn't sound like the nicest of countries to visit anyway. This memoir is extremely well-written, sharp, fascinating, brilliantly detailed and a true psychological thriller! You will not be disappointed. Well worth your time and money. See more reviews.
