Yeah, short shorts look cute and all, but when they come with thigh chafing and a perpetual wedgie, it really makes you just want to stay inside wearing sweats . And don’t get me started on trying to find cute sundresses that cover your whole butt – it's damn near impossible, if you’re not interested in looking like a grandma.
Dressing for a curvy body is difficult as it is (I'm looking at you, "one-size-fits-all" clothing brands), but summer comes with its own set of problems. The good news is, I've figured out how to stop all the worst dressing-for-summer annoyances and sourced the cutest clothes that will help you do it (from plus size clothing brands that won't make you look mom.com). Some of these hacks are as easy as a new pair of wide-fit sandals or just opting for 100% cotton over polyester.
Keep scrolling for the most genius summer outfit ideas and hacks for plus size girls.
Your feet can sometimes swell up in the summer heat (especially if you've been walking around all day long), so shop brands that carry wide-fit shoes. They'll give you extra wiggle room, so you can actually enjoy wearing your new strappy sandals.
One of the worst parts of summer: underboob sweat. Drain the boob swamp (you know that's a thing) for good with just a little antiperspirant. Spray a little under your boobs before a long day outside to help reduce sweat.
Sometimes, even the strongest deodorant can't keep the moisture at bay. If your perspiration is becoming a serious problem (like, if it's seeping through your shirt in public) try this bra liner insert made specifically to absorb boob sweat. Just slip it under the front or back of your bra for extra protection – it's basically like a maxi pad for your breasts.
The more you move, the more tight-fitting tank tops ride up. Drop a few bucks on a quality bodysuit and consider your problem solved. The fitted design stays put and wrinkle-free all day long, while also wicking away any extra thigh sweat. It's a win/win, honestly.
The reason your boobs are constantly spilling out of your crop top? You're probably wearing the wrong size bra – it's cool, though, most people are. Get the girls supported right with a bra that's actually designed for larger breasts. C lick here for the best bras for big busts that will actually fit you , according to an expert.
Trust me, not all summer dresses are created equal. Choose breathable, natural fabrics like cotton and linen over synthetic ones like polyester and you'll sweat a lot less. Plus, when you do sweat, your outfit won't get clingy and gross. It's just an added bonus that 100% natural fabrics are completely biodegradable, unlike plastic-based fibers, such as polyester and Spandex.
Baby powder , Monistat Chafing Relief Gel , and Body Glide Anti-Chafe Balm will all help to combat chub rub. That being said, you often have to reapply them throughout the day and they don't always hold up in 100 degree weather. Instead, wear bike shorts under dresses and skirts on hot days. An extra lightweight layer will help keep your crotch area dry and is a lifesaver if your skirt blows up in the wind.
Super short cut-off shorts can be a little uncomfortable if you've been #blessed in the booty department. After exactly two steps, they ride up and basically become underwear. Cuffed boyfriend shorts or bike shorts that hit at your mid-thigh are on-trend and still show off your curves.
When it's especially hot and humid out, underarm chafing from your cute crop top can be a literal pain. A low-cut halter-cut tank lets your underarms breathe and still looks hot.
Your butt can make dresses ride up in the back, so when it gets windy, you have to scramble to avoid flashing the entire world. High-low dresses are longer in the back so you can show some leg without showing your underwear, too.
If you don't want your boobs to be out and about for dinner at grandma's, go for a lace bralette, instead of your typical cami – which will just get bunched up under your outfit anyway. This version will tame your cleavage, without adding an extra full layer of clothing.
Most people aren't the same size on top and bottom, which is the reason why you might have trouble finding the right swim fit. Brands like Target , Adore Me , and Swimsuits for All let you buy swimwear separates, so you can snag tops and bottoms in different sizes and styles.
Get a higher-cut bottom and a triangle top, or tie string bottoms with an underwire top – you can mix and match until you find the perfect combo for your body.
Chafing gets worse in the summer due to sweat, so be proactive: Sew a patch on the inside of your jeans where the fabric usually rips to create an extra layer of protection. It'll give your jeans a waaay longer lifespan. Even if they do eventually start to rip, you won't have to worry because you'll already have a patch underneath.
Rings that fit comfortably when you put them on in the morning can get super tight as the day goes on. Why? As temps heat up, your fingers swell. Shop for adjustable rings that either stretch or have a gap in the band that you can adjust, so they'll fit comfortably all day long.
This is just good advice for anyone: STAY. OUT. OF. THE. SUN. Adding a hat to your look makes it extra trendy, keeps you cool, and works waaay better to protect your skin than SPF alone.
