I am pleased to report that Lilly, our 10-year-old, is enjoying her time at overnight camp at this very moment. In fact… she looked ever-so-happy in a picture posted on their site yesterday… in a bikini …the kind that I don’t allow her to wear.
That’s right; I’m one of “those” mothers. My daughter can pick out whatever she wants at the store but knows that I have veto power. Like the president. Only without any provisions to override.
Except she has now figured out a way to get around my veto; borrow the forbidden bikini while she’s at camp. Away from Mama Dictator’s eyes. Very clever. However, she must have forgotten I’d see the photo when she was mugging for the camera.
I was rendered speechless when her smiling face appeared on my screen. Momentarily. I mean, I had packed her for camp and the bathing suit in question did not look familiar. And then I started laughing. Because if my kid is going to rebel, there is no better place than at camp. Camp is where my kids do the most growing up. The most experimentation. The most exploration. Of themselves as Jews. And of emerging adults. It’s meant to be a safe place for all that and more.
Why do I object to the bikini ? Because she’s just a kid. She’s got plenty of time to scamper around in a two-piece swimsuit. I want her to feel comfortable jumping in the water without worrying that her top is going to come up as she is diving down. I want her to not worry that some idiot boy is going to swim up behind her and undo her top. Because I cherish modesty as a positive Jewish value. And because…
Because I’m just the tiniest bit jealous that my 10-year-old daughter has the kind of body that looks fantastic in anything while I have struggled with my body image since August 1984. I consider the fact that Lilly is comfortable in her body as a tribute to the fact that I have never once made any negative comment about the way I feel or look.
Which is why I’m not going to say anything about the bikini. And next summer, should she ask to wear one, I will remember the confident, radiant girl in the picture. And pass on my right to veto.

“American Pickers” star Danielle Colby is sharing the wealth of her television success with her cam-girl daughter, Memphis.
Mom, 45, spread the love to her 233,000 followers on Instagram (now try to keep up here) by re-sharing a clip from her 21-year-old daughter’s TikTok account, in which Memphis is seen promoting her own racy Instagram page — which provides a link to her subscribers-only OnlyFans site — while lip-syncing to Greta Van Fleet’s “Light My Love.”
The 11 seconds of footage depicts the young woman mouthing the words, “Your mind is a stream of colors, extending beyond our sky,” as a filter pulses a graphic of glowing hearts from behind her head.
The caption attached to Memphis’ TikTok update reads, “To be spoken to like this….. a dream. #CurameChoreo #ShowYourGlow #fypシ #fyp #36SecondsOfLightWork.”
Colby is one of the prime “pickers” on the long-running History channel series that sees junkyard and flea market enthusiasts Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz travel the country in search of rare and antique American memorabilia.
The mother of two republished the video as an Instagram Story without comment on Tuesday — though it’s safe to say she’s bursting with pride, as Danielle’s multiple careers include performing burlesque.
Memphis, a self-proclaimed “ditzy accountant,” has also modeled vintage lingerie and eveningwear for Mom in the past.
“Memphis was born an old soul,” Danielle wrote in a May Instagram post, and shared about the bullying her daughter endured in school.
“Memphis learned to fiercely protect herself at a young age,” she continued. “She protects her space, her friends, her family and she shares what she has without a second thought. She is a warrior.”

Like daughter, like mother — like Instagram influencer.
Joleen Diaz and her daughter Meilani Parks are 24 years apart in age — but strangers often think they’re sisters.
“I don’t think she minds,” says Diaz, 43, of her 19-year-old. “While she was growing up, she would often hear people tell me they thought my mother was my sister.”
The Northern California pair are very close, but while Diaz may not look her age, she does her best to act it.
“Meilani and I have never gone clubbing or partying together,” Diaz, an elementary school teacher, tells Jam Press, adding that she doesn’t plan to go out with her daughter in the future, either. While she’s had her share of late nights, “these days, I’d rather stay home, drink a nice cup of hot tea, and watch a good movie.”
The single mom (she split with her partner 13 years ago, but they remain on good terms) has a straightforward secret to explain her youthful appearance.
“I’ve always lived a healthy, active lifestyle,” Diaz says. “I rarely drink alcohol. I get a lot of rest, and eat a balanced, healthy diet.”
Apparently it’s working: The matriarch’s Instagram — which has more than 22,000 followers — is full of comments about how young she looks.
“You are officially the hottest mom in the world!” raves one Insta fan.
“You and your daughter look like sisters,” writes another.
Diaz also strictly adheres to a skin-care routine.
“I religiously take care of my skin, and every day, wash my face in the morning and before I go to bed,” she says, a regimen she claims to have begun when she was just 12 or 13. “My mom used to buy Mary Kay and I would secretly use her skin-care products.”
Sunscreen , vitamin C serum and a product called tretinoin (or Retin-A ) are also godsends, she says.
“I absolutely use sunscreen, every day, even on cloudy, rainy days,” she says. She’s been using Retin-A for roughly a year and a half and has seen her skin get “better and better” with it. “Having good skin gives me confidence,” she says, “even on the days I don’t look my best.”
Diaz also insists that her daughter follow a similarly rigorous routine to maintain what her mama gave her: “I had her start around age 12.”
The idea that Diaz is Parks’ sister, the mother points out, is not beyond the realm of possibility.
“I was pretty young when I had her, so it’s not entirely impossible that we could be sisters,” she says.
Diaz and Parks frequently shop, travel and work together though — or just hang out, “lay on the couch and talk.” Their closeness, Diaz says, helps Parks to not find the “sister comments” strange.
