Shepherd's purse starts as a rosette and then grows an upright flower stem with heart-shaped seed pods. Shepherd's purse is a fairly small annual weed that can germinate at most times of the year and is very commonly found in crops and gardens throughout New Zealand. It is often found in winter because of its ability to grow throughout the year, and so it can grow readily at times of the year when more competitive summer annuals are absent. It is usually present at other times of the year too, but just might not be quite as noticeable. It has long-lived seed, lasting in the soil for several decades under some conditions, so this coupled with the rapid life cycle means there can be quite a build-up of seed in the soil. It starts as a rosette, with very variable leaf shapes which can make it difficult to identify at times while vegetative. For example, it could be easily confused with the rosette of hawksbeard , though the leaf shape is slightly different. Likewise, a Cape weed rosette looks similar, though Cape weed usually has a larger rosette and is whitish under the leaf. Although the rosettes seldom get much bigger than cm in diameter, the stems can often get up to cm tall if growing conditions are good. Another weed that looks a bit like shepherd's purse is bitter cress , though the leaf shape is slightly different, it doesn't tend to get as big as shepherd's purse and the pods that form are not as wide. It tolerates quite a few different herbicides, being quite resistant to many selective herbicides such as dicamba, clopyralid, picloram and trifluralin, making it very difficult to control in forage brassicas. However, the herbicide clomazone sold in products such as Director CS and Ombre Encaps will control it in brassica crops if applied at pre-emergence. It is well controlled by MCPA and 2,4-D, and most crops other than the brassicas have a number of herbicides that can be used to control it. Non-selective herbicides such as glyphosate and amitrole easily kill it, as does cultivation. Catsear is a perennial weed that grows as a rosette with an upright flower stem. Musky storksbill starts life as a rosette, with each leaf made up of a series of leaflets. Twin cress is a small weed, starting as a rosette and when mature sends out prostrate stems. The heart-shaped seed pods resemble purses worn by medieval shepherds, and the copper-coloured seeds within look like tiny coins, hence the common name. Weeds usually thrive in average garden conditions, reproducing and spreading easily. It is up to you to decide what you call a weed and what you choose to retain or remove. Save to My scrapbook. Quick facts. Most of the leaves are near ground level, arranged in rosettes. The leaves themselves vary quite a lot, with some having straight edges and some having very dissected ones. Branching flower stems can reach a height of 50cm 20in , but are much shorter in poor, dry soils. Flowers are small and white, each with four petals, and these are followed by characteristic heart-shaped seed pods. The rosette of leaves of a young shepherd's purse plant. It is not fussy about where it grows, so seeds have a good chance of germinating if they land on bare soil. However, plants are short-lived and have one main taproot, making them easy to hoe off or pull out. Do this on a warm, dry or windy day, so exposed roots dry out quickly. Hoeing removes weeds with minimal soil disturbance. Hand pulling is usually easy, but on compacted soil you may need to use a hand fork. Should I use a weedkiller?
