Buridan Ass
Buridan's ass is an illustration of a paradox in philosophy in the conception of free will. [1][2] It refers to a hypothetical situation wherein an ass (or donkey) that is equally hungry and thirsty is placed precisely midway between a stack of hay and a pail of water.
Buridan's ass isn't able to decide, so his will is obviously not free. But then, Buridan's ass is a mere fiction. How about real donkeys? If we could find a donkey which was dumb enough to starve between two bales, we would have evidence against free will, at least as far as donkeys are concerned (or at least that particular donkey).

``Buridan's Ass'' is a paradox in philosophy, in which a hungry donkey, located at the mid-point between two bales of hay, is frozen in indecision about which way to go and faces starvation --- he is unable to move one way or the other. This paradox didn't originate with Buridan -- it's been found back in Aristotle's time. A hungry and thirsty man cannot decide whether to slake his thirst first or his hunger, and dies. Buridan, in his commentaries on Aristotle, chose a dog, but his critics, in their parody of Buridan, turned it into an ass.

Buridan's ass (14TH CENTURY). A theoretical illustration of the dilemma posed by the need to make a decision between two equally attractive proposals. The concept itself dates from much earlier times, being discussed first by Aristotle (384-322 BC). In Buridan's example, an ass faces starvation when it is unable to choose between two equally appetizing piles of hay.
Buridan's ass is a philosophical thought experiment depicting a donkey placed equidistant between two identical bales of hay, equally hungry and thirsting for neither more than the other, which starves to death from indecision because pure reason provides no basis to prefer one option over the other. Buridan applied these analytical techniques so successfully in his metaphysics, natural philosophy, and ethics that, for many of his successors, they came to be identified with the method of philosophy, understood as a secular practice, i.e., as distinct from theology.
Abstract The moral of Buridan's Ass is that it can sometimes be rational to perform one action rather than another even though one lacks stronger reason to do so. Yet it is also commonly believed that it cannot ever be rational to believe one proposition rather than another if one lacks stronger reason to do so. This asymmetry has been taken to indicate a deep difference between epistemic and ...
The mythical hungry ass, facing two identical bundles of hay equidistant from him, has engendered two related questions. Can he choose one of the bundles, there seemingly being nothing to incline him one way or the other? If he can, the second puzzle — pertaining to rational choice — arises. It seems the ass cannot rationally choose one of the bundles, because there is no sufficient reason ...

The medieval philosopher Buridan reportedly constructed a thought experiment to support his view that human behavior was determined rather than "free"—hence rational agents couldn't choose between two equally good alternatives. Buridan's Ass faced a choice between two identical bales of hay; governed only by reason, the donkey starved, unable to choose. It seems clear that we face many such cases, and resolve them successfully. Our success seems to tell against any view on which action and intention require evaluative preference. I argue that these views can account for intention and intentional action in cases ...
