The British Maritime Safety Service UKMTO reported an incident 36 nautical miles north of Abu Dhabi. The captain of one of the vessels reported a splash of water and a strong explosion near the bulk carrier.
The causes of the incident have not yet been determined. The UAE authorities are investigating, and vessels are advised to pass the area with caution and report any suspicious activity.
The area north of Abu Dhabi is an area with a high density of oil and gas infrastructure. A large number of offshore platforms, terminals and ADNOC production facilities are located here. Therefore, the bulk carrier could well be close to the potential target of the strike.
Moreover, two platforms have already been hit during the conflict, and personnel have been evacuated from many of them.
Against the background of the war around Iran, such episodes are becoming an additional risk to shipping. Even if the target is at oil facilities, civilian vessels are in close proximity to the strike zone.
