In Bulgaria there is a trend for dialects to give way to the standard Bulgarian language and this is also affecting the dialects spoken by the Pomaks and their usage is now rare in urban areas and among younger people.

This article, by examining the history of Pomak identities during the twentieth century, concludes that identities are socially constructed through performance, political struggle and compromise.
Linguistically, however, in many Pomak villages, the languages spoken are various dialects of Bulgarian, heavily influenced by Turkish and Greek. Furthermore, though Muslims, the majority of Bulgaria's Pomaks speak little or no Turkish beyond the words that have entered their dialects over the course of the last five centuries.
The recent dictionary of Pomak-Greek and Greek-Pomak, published in Greece (Xhanti) is neglected. My informants speak both a purer form of Bulgarian when conversing with outsiders as myself, coming from the capital, or a variant with many more Turkish words when being among themselves.
