No money? No time? Want to cosplay?
Cosplay on a shoestring budget... literally ,
I tried making chise’s necklace on the cheap. The “stone” is made from sealing wax poured into a mold from a diy candy kit.
And the string is .. well... a shoestring :D
ARMOUR BUILDING - Dollar Store Cosplay
One of the easiest ways to find cosplay, is going to thrift stores/secondhand clothing stores. It's cheap, informal, and fun, too!
I found this blazer which is (nearly) perfect for Nyo!France! Maybe a bit on the short side, but I know exactly how to adjust this to perfection! €3,00. It just smells a bit like my grandmother right now.
I couldn't help but buy these too. I'm beginning to hord picture frames. One of these three is haunted but I don't know which. The glass cut my finger when I lifted it to clean it. I guess I'll get ancient diseases now. Epic.
This thing was real leather, but for 6,50 you could pretend you're 2p!America whose buttons were kindly replaced by cute ones. Courtesy of 2p!England of course.
I haven't found exactly what I was looking for, as I have a photoshoot tomorrow and still need the outfit, but when the wife gets home we'll go to another store to hunt!
Went to see Endgame (for the third time oops) with a cosplay group. Twas lit my pals.
Tips for beginner cosplayers with really low budgets? 😁
DO take advantage of thrift shops! They have some wacky stuff and sometimes you’ll find the perfect piece to either use as is or alter to finish your costume. Also, you can make use of fabric from larger garments instead of buying from JoAnne’s (also here in Colorado we have Colorado Fabrics which is also a cheaper alternative).
DO buy your costumes if you need! Don’t be discouraged by those who say that you’re not a real cosplayer unless you make your own costumes, they’re spouting crap. Most people start out the same way, buying the pieces for their cosplays, so go ahead!
DO learn to alter, as that can lead to learning to sew from scratch, and that’s the skill that will make you a better cosplayer, even on a budget. Start small, then work your way up to bigger projects. Don’t be intimidated, you can do it!
DO take advantage of craft foam, hot glue guns, cardboard, and other cheap materials. You can learn to make some incredible looking stuff out of them, and you can get a GIANT roll of craft foam for about 9 bucks that will least you forever.
DO raid your own closet! There might be some items in there you forgot existed that could be perfect for your next costume!
DO check EBay seller ratings, if you really don’t want to invest in a great wig (I live and die by arda, but they ARE pricey) then make sure that the seller you are buying from has good reviews, 98-100% are ideal. If you are going to blow cash on any part of your cosplay, I definitely recommend getting a good wig. Wigs can really bring your costume up to a whole new level, and if arda is still too expensive, then The Five Wits is a great alternative! Guaranteed quality, heat resistant, and affordable!
DO experiment with makeup! Good makeup is another piece that can make or break a cosplay, so practice a lot and build your inventory. Try and find a look that compliments both your face and your character! Also spend some money on a sealant if you can, even if you aren’t painting yourself grey it can ensure you look great all day long. (contouring is also a great skill to have)
DO check out uniqso and Pinky Paradise for colored contacts (do not order unless you have visited your eye doctor!) and don’t sweat it if you can’t change your eye color for a cosplay, a lot of people don’t.
DO practice posing! If asked for a photo you want to strike a pose that will show off your costume and you! It can make even a cheap costume look high quality.
DO ask for help from other cosplayers and friends! They may tell you something you hadn’t though of and are usually happy to give advice!
If anyone else has their own tips, please add them!
Rather than just saying, “use coupons,” this video explains how the coupons policy works and I give tips on how to save even more!

AKA COSPLAY HACKS: THE POST.
So I don't SPEND MONEY on cosplay, because I am a poor college student, but essentially, I make a lot of my cosplays, cosplay props, and various other things from random junk I find around my apartment. Organized by shape, here's a list of really useful stuff you can find laying around, in a dumpster, or for cheap. I live in FL, USA, so some of this stuff may not be readily available depending on where you live, but hopefully it gives you some ideas!
Cylindrical objects:
- Oatmeal containers
- bleach wipe containers
- pringles tubes
- mailing tubes
- toilet paper and paper towel tubes
- dried out markers
- empty pill bottles
- empty aerosol cans
- upholstery fabric roll tubes
- shampoo bottles
Squares and rectangles:
- Pizza boxes
- cereal boxes
- mailing boxes
- tupperware
- CD and DVD cases
- the inside of a fabric bolt
- candy boxes (nerds, swedish fish, etc)
- VHS tape boxes and tapes

Triangles and weird shapes:
- sword and some mailing boxes
- acne wash and cream tubes
- milk cartons
- styrofoam packing materials from appliances and such
- old lightbulbs
- clothes hangers
- food jars like applesauce and peanut butter
- the little plastic things from inside kinder eggs
- solo and dixie cups

Circles n' stuff:
- old records, cds. etc
- ball pit balls
- ping pong balls
- floral foam discs
- christmas wreath bases

Flat stuff:
- craft foam, cardboard, and foamboard
-puzzle foam mats
- frame boxes, furniture and appliance boxes, etc
- the backs of notepads and old sketchbooks
- broken picture frames (be careful if you are working with glass!)

Glowy stuff and cool junk:
- tap lights ($4 for 2 at Wal-mart and target)
- christmas light strings
- voice changer helmet toys
- dollar store light-up wands and swords (totally harvestable for batteries and lights)
- glow in the dark stars and planets can be cut apart
- hot glue makes for great fake slime drips, paint drips, etc.
- you can buy glow in the dark and blacklight reflective paint for like $2 at wal-mart.
Hi. I finally got to the point of my cosplay life where I decided it’s time to get familiar with casting. And like with every new thing, decided to start from cheap ways! (THIS IS BASICALLY RESHARING THE KNOWLEDGE I GATHERED FROM OTHER SOURCES WHILE ADDING MY OWN OBSERVATIONS AS A SIMPLE MORTAL FROM MIDDLE EUROPE WHO JUST CAN’T GO “oh just go get it at Walmart” BECAUSE WE DON’T HAVE SUCH THING HERE)
After some research I found where I can get silicone specifically made to create molds. But I didn’t want to start with buying silicone by kilos. So looked up some tutorials on the internet about making silicone molds from easy to find materials.
So apparently all you need is 100% silicone (hardware stores sell it as sealants), caulking gun for it, water, plastic bowl (that you can throw out later) and soap/dish soap (not entirely sure which is better, because I’ve seen all kinds being used) or corn starch.
