Our rooms on the north side were already fairly chilly, and it got me worrying about our chances of a power failure. Since our wood supply was now depleted, the fireplace option was no longer available if the heat failed. It was no surprise when school was cancelled again the next day. Really, the situation was continuing to grow more and more serious. With our indoor thermostat firmly set at its highest level, our flat was nonetheless getting chillier with each day that passed. For the first time in a long while, people were standing in line for bread. A state of panic-buying had set in, and customers were cleaning out the stores. The news reported that eight people had frozen to death in Hungary, and the very same day that edition hit the streets, it went right back to snowing. During breakfast, I watched out the window as two men broke off pieces of shrubbery along the sidewalk, presumably for firewood, and shuffled away.
