The Forest Warden Programme, created and coordinated by the Presidential Programme for Social Action of Colombia, has as its main objective the incorporation of farmer families into a process of voluntary eradication of illicit crops and the recovery of the forest in ecologically and socially vulnerable areas. UNODC monitors the achievements of the Programme with respect to voluntary eradication, forest recovery and socio-economic development. Additionally, UNODC supports the publication of 'El Bosque', issued periodically with a circulation of 60, exemplars, explaining the challenges of becoming a forest warden, including progress and problems to be resolved. This project is directed at improving the socio-economic condition of farmers by increasing their income through support for their products' sale as well as through contribution to environmental conservation. This is to be achieved by improving national capacity to design and implement sustainable alternative development programmes, including preventive actions, within the broader national development context, aimed at reducing and eliminating illicit crop cultivation, mainstreaming alternative development and environmental protection needs in areas under illicit crop cultivation. An important component of the project strategy is the enhancement of existing partnerships with international entities for the certification of fair-trade and organic products and with the private sector to promote commercially viable alternative development products and services. I was looking through the search terms that brought people to my site earlier and I noticed an interesting trend that made me chuckle. For some reason, some of the most popular searches were about buying cocaine in Colombia. I am a travel blogger of the people, after all. It is practically effortless, and this goes for most of the large cities in Colombia. Medellin and Cartagena are big party cities with a sizable tourist population so it goes without saying that the dealers know that those places are where to go. Cocaine is actually legal to an extent in Colombia, but the buying and selling of it is illegal. The reign of Pablo Escobar and the legacy that followed have given Colombia a reputation that has been hard to shake, despite the fact that the Colombia of today has all but erased the demons of a Colombia past.
