There’s a lot more to this iconic rom-com than meets the eye.
Pretty Woman is one of those films that everyone has seen at least once. If you’re one of the few who haven’t, you should definitely watch it before you die. The story about a sex worker in Hollywood who falls in love with a businessman and changes his perspective on life has become one of the world’s most iconic rom-coms and audiences still can’t get enough 30 years later.
There’s a lot more to this lovable movie than meets the eye. A ton of things went down on the set, from improvised scenes to actors turning down roles to massive script changes. Keep reading to find out 15 behind-the-scenes facts you didn’t know about Julia Roberts, the cast of Pretty Woman , and the classic film itself.
One of the most famous scenes in Pretty Woman is undoubtedly the moment before Edward and Vivian go to the opera when he presents her the jewelry box. Interestingly, this was totally improvised! Julia Roberts didn’t know that Richard Gere was going to snap the box on her fingers and her laughter is genuine.
The original version of Pretty Woman was a lot darker than how the film turned out. Before Disney was involved, the script intended for Vivian to die at the end, rather than get her happily ever after with Edward. Edward was supposed to throw her out of his car along with the money he owed her.
Originally, there was much less of a focus on the relationship between Edward and Vivian and more of a focus on Vivian’s job. The original script was called $3,000 which referred to the amount of money Edward paid Vivian for the week he spent with her. Their relationship was intended to be purely for work.
The necklace that Edward gives Vivian before the opera isn’t an optical illusion—it really was a super expensive piece of jewelry. In fact, the filmmakers couldn’t afford to pay a quarter of a million dollars to buy it and so they had to rent it. The jewelry store agreed as long as there would be an armed guard watching over the necklace at all times.
When Edward first picks up Vivian on Hollywood Boulevard, she ends up kicking him out of the driver’s seat and driving the car for him. In reality, Julia Roberts, who was 21 at the time of filming, didn’t actually have her driver’s license. The excitement we see Vivian experience was totally real!
Vivian Ward’s red hair is iconic, but to achieve the vibrant color, Julia Roberts had to dye her brunette locks. During the bubble bath scene, the tub was filled with so much detergent to produce so many bubbles that the water actually stripped the red color from Roberts’ hair. She had to have it re-dyed after the scene.
It’s hard to imagine Pretty Woman with any other actress playing the leading role of Vivian. But when Disney became involved, they did not want to cast Roberts due to the fact that she was a relatively unknown actress at the time. Luckily, they saw her potential after another audition and decided to hire her.
The late Ralph Bellamy enjoyed a long and successful career in the film business. By the time he appeared in Pretty Woman as James Morse, he was a bonafide star. While Pretty Woman launched Roberts’ career, it was the very last film that Bellamy starred in before his death.
Richard Gere is the perfect Edward Lewis as far as we’re concerned, but the actor was hesitant about accepting the role at first. He turned it down several times because he wasn’t interested in the project. In the end, Julia Roberts flew to New York to meet with him in person and convince him.
The wardrobe in Pretty Woman is pretty prolific. One of the standout pieces is the red coat that Vivian wears the night that she meets Edward. Interestingly, the costume designers saw this coat on a stranger in Hollywood and paid them for it. They literally took it from someone’s back!
There were a few memorable moments in the film that were unscripted. One was when Vivian is called into the hotel director’s office and she blows her nose into the handkerchief he gives her. Julia Roberts improvised this gag and wasn’t sure that it was going to make it into the final cut.
At one point in the film, Edward Lewis plays a beautiful piece on the piano. In real life, Richard Gere is an accomplished pianist. He actually composed the piece he plays and played it himself. Aside from the piano, Gere also plays the trumpet (but the director didn’t feel the need to include any scenes showing Edward playing the trumpet!).
One of the most endearing scenes in the film, that really makes us fall in love with Vivian, is when she watches reruns of I Love Lucy in the hotel room. In order to get Julia Roberts to laugh so convincingly at the TV, director Gary Marshall had to tickle her feet from off camera.
At times, filming Pretty Woman was painful. In the scene where Edward catches Philip Stuckey trying to assault Vivian, the two get into a scuffle which resulted in Richard Gere actually breaking a crown on one of his molars. You can see him moving his tongue around in his mouth in the scene, trying to assess the damage.
It looks like we’re never getting a Pretty Woman sequel . Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, and Garry Marshall all promised never to do a sequel unless all of them were involved, which would be impossible now that Marshall has passed away. Luckily, the film had the perfect ending anyway and we don’t need a sequel!
