Brushless Motors - Powering a Sustainable Future!

ISL Products

Over the last century or so pollution has been steadily rising, which has led to climate change and the degradation of ecosystems all across the globe. As nations and their citizens become ever more aware of the damage that pollution is wreaking on the planet, electric vehicles have emerged as a viable alternative to burning fossil fuels for transportation.

Brushless Motors

Today, electric cars and bikes are now both widely available and are affordable, giving customers the freedom to choose a more sustainable lifestyle. Whilst the adoption of electric vehicles seems very recent to many of us, electric vehicles have actually existed for quite some time.

The first e-vehicle was a tricycle that was created in 1881 by a French inventor named Gustave Trouvé. The electric motor made it possible to reduce the weight of heavier components and generate superior energy output.

Ever since Masseur Trouvé’s invention caught the public’s imagination, designers and engineers all over the world have spent countless hours in pursuit of increasing functionality and performance of electric vehicles - And very rightly so. Electric vehicles are known to consume much less fuel which, consequently, reduces greenhouse emissions.

Much of the focus with the design of electric vehicles has been in an attempt at reinventing the modern automobile. More specifically, great effort is being made to improve the serviceable lifespan and performance of batteries. Better energy storage and battery life will improve the performance of electric bikes and scooters too. However, at the heart of every electric vehicle is the electric motor.

Brushless DC motors:

Brushless DC Motors are high performance, lightweight, efficient, and durable. They significantly outperform brushed direct current motors and are lighter in weight than alternate current (AC) induction motors. This is because induction motors run on AC power, which requires many more coils of wire, thereby resulting in a heavier motor.

Brushed Motors also need commutation brushes to function. With excessive use, and over time, these brushes break down and create a fine dust. As a result, they deteriorate much faster than a BLDC and will eventually fail. This increases downtime and maintenance costs.

Brushless motors, on the other hand, require much less wiring and function without the need for carbon brushes. As a result they are lighter, and costs associated with maintenance are greatly reduced. Due to this reduction in maintenance and extended serviceable lifespan, brushless DC motors are highly suitable for use in transportation. Brushless motors are:

  • Lightweight
  • Have an increased serviceable lifespan
  • Offer increased efficiency
  • Virtually eliminate electromagnetic interference

Brushless motors can be found extensively in hybrid and electric vehicles. With advancements in technology, some bicycle manufactures have now designed bikes that feature brushless DC motors built into the hub of their front wheel.
