I have used John Frieda products quite a bit and am a big user of the brilliant brunette collection. As a pretty dark brunette, I like to use this product to pull out the red/blonde colors my hair usually gets after a lot of time in the sun. As a child, I spent my summers in the Arizona sun 8+ hours a day and would get it but as an adult, I have to work during the summer so I can't get that red tinted hair I loved. The product is pretty amazing and does it's job but there are a few things you should keep in mind before diving in. 1) This stuff smells! It stinks like hair bleach and your hair will smell like it. Not horribly so but enough that when the wind blows or you move, you'll get a whiff. That usually goes away after the next wash. 2) There are a lot of products lines that you can get away with not using the whole collection. This is not one of those - you need the shampoo and conditioner as well. It helps it last and is designed to work with this lightening treatment to help take care of your hair. 3) It says leave in for 5 minutes. Leave it in for longer. I usually just put it in first thing then wash myself/shave/etc then wash the product out and follow up with the shampoo and conditioner. 4) There is no limit on how many treatments you can do. That being said, don't do like 10 in 10 days. I have done one then followed up with another in a few days because one treatment is very subtle and the second one gives me more of what I am looking for. 5) It will damage your hair a little. I assume there is some sort of bleaching going on (judging by the smell) to get the hair lighter. This damage is usually fixed with a good condition, hair mask, or leave in conditioner.

I am so disappointed! This literally did nothing to lighten my hair. In fact, if anything, it looks darker. I will try what’s left in the tube one more time but will NOT be buying again.

Tried coloring my own hair again (big mistake). I am 62 wanted to cover my graying. After many failed attempts over some time, I was left with very Dark Brown almost Black Hair. Tried a medium Blond which did nothing, it stayed the same dark color. With a lot of doubt about this product and the cost, I tried it. But not too bad.I lost track or time and left it on for 9 minutes. For the people who said it did nothing, this my be the answer. Yes, My hair felt dry and stiff after I rinsed it out. But then after using the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Shampoo and Conditioner. It was soft and smelled very nice. My Color is a Lighter Brown and I love it. I've used several tubes of this so far and keep coming back for more. As a guy, I Imagine I use less per application than a woman given the length of my hair. I usually get 2 uses per tube. A lot of people have asked if you can use part of the tube and then save it for later and you definitely can. When you first use it there is a plastic tab at the end that you need to break off and that can't be replaced so there is no way to reseal it, however, it also comes with a plastic cap that you put back on to avoid spills but this doesn't completely reseal it. However, I've never had any problems with it drying out within a month or so of opening. On to the results, as a guy, I've never had professional hair dye or used any other kit so I can't compare it to those. However, I've always been pleased with the subtle results. For reference, I use about half a tube for about 2 inches of thick hair only on the top of my head, not the sides. This usually produces noticeable, albeit, subtle results, which is exactly what I want. The change is especially noticeable in certain types of lighting, and sometimes I'll be in a bathroom or somewhere washing my hands and notice it much more in different types of lighting. Your hair may feel a bit "brassy" after a treatment but I've never had any lasting issues and it goes away after an application of conditioner and some hair moisturizer.

As medium brunette with 100% natural hair (no dying in many years), I've been really happy with this shampoo. I used to have nice natural highlights (blond and occasionally auburn), but they have faded and my hair is darker overall because of less exposure to sun where I live (and needing to protect my pale skin with hats when the sun is out). This really helped bring out highlights in a subtle yet noticeable-to-me way. I also got random compliments from strangers on the color of my hair, which I haven't gotten in years! I didn't find this drying, although I wasn't using a crazy expensive shampoo before this, either. I find that more natural shampoos don't work as well on my hair as I'd like, unfortunately, as they seem to make them greasy. For now at least, this has been an easy way to subtly improve the tone of my hair for barely more than the cost of my previous shampoo. I am not using the conditioner or the leave-in treatment yet (I need a specific type of conditioner to tame my frizzy hair), but maybe I will try the toner this summer. Your results may vary, of course; even though my hair color was looking pretty flat before using this, it still had a little bit of natural color-dimension to work with.
