BRUGES — A quiet discovery is stepping into the spotlight as Bruges’ hidden stone steps begin to steal the show. City officials released a refreshed map this week that highlights a network of discreet stairways tucked behind courtyards, along canal embankments, and between narrow lanes. Local historians say these steps, long overlooked, have gradually become a fresh lens on the city’s medieval charm.

The so-called hidden steps connect the ring of canals to the heart of the old town, allowing pedestrians to rise from waterfront walks to sunlit squares without using major thoroughfares.
