What a crazy story line!! Omg I was so impressed with Jake Gyllenhaal in this movie and the 2 little girls in it really hold their own with Natalie Portman Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal! Very talented! There are a few graphic scenes in the middle of the film which if you don’t like blood i wouldn’t recommend! But other than that it is an unbelievable movie with amazing acting!

My rating is more of a 3.5. Thanks for reading! Brothers is a 2009 American psychological drama war film directed by Jim Sheridan and written by David Benioff. A remake of the 2004 Danish film, It follows Captain Sam Cahill (portrayed by Tobey Maguire), a presumed-dead prisoner of the War in Afghanistan who deals with post-traumatic stress while reintegrating into society following his release from captivity. After Sam is presumed dead in Afghanistan, his brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) vows to take care of Sam's wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his children. Tommy and Grace become close, and when Sam unexpectedly returns home, the consequences of their actions threaten the foundation of the entire family. I can tell that I've had an especially hard time with a film when my comments begin with a complaint. Given the elapsed amount of time that passes while watching (15 minutes short of 2 hours) It is a real shame to say that much of the characters here feel unusually hollow by the time the conclusion is reached. Very little is done to genuinely explore the complexity of the individuals on screen, and this is tragic considering the gravity of the enclosed contents and themes; as a consequence of this failure to develop and capitalize on what feel like should-be present intricacies it is hard to offer empathy as an audience member or remain emotionally invested in varying points of contention. (Not so fun fact: Jake Gyllenhaal found out Heath Ledger passed away while he was literally in the middle of filming a scene for this film. Given his reputation and what I know of his bereavement following this loss his seemingly removed performance warrants some forgiveness and sensitivity.) If the characters and their otherwise shallow existences isn’t enough to conjure criticism alone the pacing doesn’t help Brothers establish itself as an engaging source of entertainment; more specifically, it seems largely suspended from reality in regards to how the overarching situation develops. As an example (and, perhaps I’m nit-picking, that’s a very fair assumption) it is implied that Sam is declared dead almost instantaneously following the presumption that he is missing-in-action with the “relationship” between Tommy and Grace developing not long after; while I don’t mean to suggest that I’m familiar with nuances as they relate to military service (Because I’m not) or that behaviors related to grief are always understable (Because they’re not) I will argue that Brothers repeatedly shoot itself in the foot by making use of a pace that is congealed by elements that are alarmingly artificial in practice and perhaps would have benefited from making its story happen over a larger period of time. In doing my own research I do want to congratulate 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔 (2009) as a play-by-play translation of the Danish film mentioned above (𝑩𝒓ø𝒅𝒓𝒆); films that remain immensely dedicated to their often-ignored source material are always commendable, and this makes of the character design and pacing a bit easier to digest in stride. All things considered: the end is a haunting crescendo that is delivered in full by an almost hair-raising and shockingly surprising performance by Maguire. The last 20 minutes serve as a painfully poignant representation of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its insidiously devastating effects; the catastrophic climax is preceded by a most brief conversation (almost a debate, actually) regarding accessibility to mental health related services and hints at stigmas that keep individuals that may need it most (In this case, people in the Marines following a period of trauma) from pursuing them. In many ways it is cruel for directors to make an audience wait so long for the message they so desperately want to convey, but a relatively sound exploration of themes as they relate to betrayal, guilt, and mental-wellness makes it worth sitting through 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔 (2009) at least once ultimately worth it. Conceivably being a waste of the talent its cast is capable of perusing, 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔 (2009) deserves acclaim for being dutifully anchored to the source material that inspired it; the narration may be far from spotless, but the enormity of its presence and potential implications are clean. I would recommend (Even if not strongly)

It is good to watch movies that help us understand PTSD. The cause of PTSD and its impact on the family are seen in this movie.
