Born as Britt-Marie Eklund on October 6, 1942, in Stockholm, Sweden, she is a Swedish actress and singer. Her parents were Maj Britt, a secretary, and Sven Axel Eklund, who had an upscale clothing store in Stockholm and was also the captain of the Swedish national curling team. Her mother died after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in the 1980s and it impacted her greatly.
Ekland was raised with three younger brothers and she said that she was overweight for the major part of her childhood. “I was very heavy. God, I was brutal-looking. I always tried to be funny to make up for the fact that I was fat and ugly.”
As a teenager, she left school to travel with a theatre company and a talent agent spotted her in a coffee shop in Italy and sent her to London to audition for movies.
Ekland’s film career started with tiny roles and uncredited roles including her first screen appearance in G.I. Blues (1960). She followed it with a minor role in The Happy Thieves (1960) and played small roles in Swedish films Kortar sommaren (1962) and De tar hos mig han bar varit (1963). She got her first major supporting role in the George Marshall Western film Advance to the Rear (1964).

She also featured in the British cult horror movie The Wicker Man (1973) and played the role of a Bond girl in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974).
Ekland shot to fame overnight after her 1964 romance and marriage to the English actor and comedian, Peter Sellers, who had proposed to her after seeing her photo in a newspaper and then met her in London. She stood by his side after he repeatedly suffered heart attacks after their marriage.
She was stepmother to Sellers’ kids Sarah and Michael (who died of a heart attack at about the same age as his father). In the year 1965, they had a daughter Victoria. The couple worked on three film projects together, A Carol for Another Christmas (1964), After the Fox (1966), and The Bobo (1967), before they divorced in 1968.
She had a son Nic Adler with record producer Lou Adler in June 1973. She also had a highly notorious romance with rock star Rod Stewart after they were introduced by Joan Collios in 1975 and lived together for over two years, and Ekland sacrificed her career to nurture their relationship.
From 1979-1981, she was in a relationship with Girl frontman and the future L.A. Guns singer Phil Lewis and they even got engaged.
Later when she was 42-years of age, she got engaged to Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom in 1984. At the time, he was 19 years younger than her. They had a son named Thomas Jefferson (born in 1988) together. They divorced in 1992.
