Update 21/06/19 : The UK's 'porn ban' has been delayed again, due to the government's failure to tell EU regulators about the plan reports the BBC .
The result is that the 'ban' will be pushed back for up to six months while the government completes the notification process, according to an estimation given by Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright.
"I recognise that many members of this House and many people beyond it have campaigned passionately for age verification to come into force as soon as possible to ensure that children are protected from pornographic material they should not see."
"I apologise to them all for the fact that a mistake has been made that means that these measures will not be into force as soon as they and I would like," Wright said .
Original Story: On the 15th of July 2019, the UK government will enact legislation it has been trying to implement for six years : an automatic block on pornography.
Almost every pornographic website that could be viewed from the United Kingdom will have to have an age verification system built into it, lest children or teenagers try to access their content.
Currently, all it takes to 'prove' that you are over 18 is clicking a checkbox or filling in a potentially fraudulent date of birth form; from July, users will have to buy a license, or hand over sensitive information, to watch pornography - and naturally, many are looking for ways to get around it.
But how will the block actually work? Who’s checking your age, who is enforcing the ban, and will it have a positive effect on the internet? Here are the answers:
After the ban comes into effect, every for-profit pornography website that is accessible in the United Kingdom will need to have some sort of age-verification system in place. If they do not, the websites could have their payment services withdrawn or being blocked completely - enforced by the British Board of Film Classification.
Users will have provide identification documents, such as credit cards and passports, or use their phones in order to prove their identity. People over the age of 18 will also be able to buy a ‘porn pass’ with a code on it, that can then be inputted into the website.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, the government is letting the porn industry create their own age verification systems. If the system meets the criteria, the website will have a green 'AV' symbol displayed. The systems we currently know about are:

Social media sites do not come under the block either, due to an exception for websites where less than one third of its content is pornographic, so platforms such as Twitter and Reddit (which have a looser approach to nudity than Facebook ) are in the clear.
Is anyone's? The age verification companies insist that your data will be secure, but over the first half of 2018 approximately 4.5 billion records were compromised due to breaches. Although there are steps you can take to ensure your safety online , eventually it does come down to the reliability of the company .
Speaking to The Guardian the executive director of the Open Rights Group, Jim Killock, has said that the potential for a major breach still concerns him. “It might lead to people being outed...Politicians don’t understand that data about their porn preferences might end up in the hands of journalists or others.”
“The problem is you’re giving all your data to the pornographic equivalent of Mark Zuckerberg: ‘This is what I like, this is who I am, and these are all of the sites I’ve visited’,” Killock said, referring to AgeID specifically.
AgeID says that "when a user registers an AgeID account using an email address and password, both are protected by a salted, one-way hash", which it says means that the company does not know the identity or date of birth of its users.
However, it has been reported that while AgeID's current privacy policy says that information gathered is protected, a previous version of the policy (which MindGeek apparently states can be changed at any time) says the company could collect names, addresses, date of birth and browsing data.
As such, the best advice we can give is finding a way around the block entirely.
While almost every pornographic website in the UK is blocked by an age verification system, that does not apply to websites you access through a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
A VPN creates a secure, encrypted tunnel between your computer and a server managed by the VPN company; when your traffic is moving through this tunnel no-one, including your internet service provider, is able to see where the traffic is coming from.
Therefore, if you try and access a pornographic website in the UK via a VPN client, which reroutes your traffic through a French server before accessing the public internet and showing you the content, your internet service provider will believe that the connection is being made through a device in France - and so won’t be blocked.
There are a number of good VPN providers out there, many of them being available for free . Although many people might be tempted to go for the client that costs you nothing, you should always be cautious. Some free VPNs restrict you to certain servers, so you would not be able to move to a better server if one was performing poorly, or swap to different locations quickly and easily. Moreover, others have been known to track users’ activities and send the information back to their corporate overlords .

It's unlikely. There are millions of pornographic websites that are available in the UK and its doubtful the BBFC can monitor them all.
The simplicity of avoiding the ban should also be a matter of concern to the government. Young people, who are the main targets of this ban, are already being encouraged to experiment with technology to get around restrictions (such as sideloading Fortnite onto Android phones ). It is not impossible, therefore, to imagine them installing a VPN extension on Google Chrome, for example, in order to bypass the block.
Nevertheless, the government is marching on regardless in its mission to control the internet through new laws , digital regulators , and TV shows for children . The block on pornography, at this stage, is probably unavoidable - but it's easy, and legal, to avoid.
