The British Museum in London is being recreated in Minecraft.

This project is part of the Museum of the Future program, which aims at increasing the institution's appeal.

Many real-life organizations have created maps in Minecraft, including Ordnance Survey, the Danish government and Ordnance Survey. Extremecraft They want to make young people aware of their work.

Last week, Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokeswoman for the museum emphasised that the project was still at "an early planning stage", and the "build" had not yet begun.

She added that the organisation was intending to recruit members of the public to help with the "construction".

One British Museum employee posted details of the project on the social media site Reddit, asking for volunteers to get involved.

He received an enthusiastic response from Minecraft fans around the globe.

Initial stages

The first step will be to digitally create the Great Court as well as the facade of the building.

The institution hopes this stage can be ready in time to host a public debate entitled "Changing public dialogues about museum collections in the digital age", which will take place on October 16.

Ovum Analytics' Ed Barton, who studies gaming, told BBC that the British Museum's switch to Minecraft would help it become "perceived" as something enjoyable and would be an effective educational tool for a younger crowd.

"It's the digital equivalent of building the British Museum in Lego," he said. "You must build it brick-by-brick."

He said that the institution is to be commended as it crowdsourced the project, "as they turn it into a collaboration thing" and could further engage younger Minecraft enthusiasts.

He said, "What cool project it would to be asked build the Elgin Marbles using Minecraft."
