The home secretary , [note 1] is a senior minister of the Crown within the Government of the United Kingdom , and head of the Home Office . As one of the four Great Offices of State , the home secretary is a senior member of the British Cabinet .

The current secretary of state for the Home Department is Priti Patel , MP , who was appointed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in July 2019. [1]

Corresponding to what is generally known as an interior minister in many other countries, the home secretary's remit includes:

The position of Secretary of State for the Home Department was created in the British governmental reorganisation of 1782 , in which the Northern and Southern Departments became the Foreign Office and Home Office respectively.

Formerly, the Home Secretary was the minister responsible for prisons and probation in England and Wales; however in 2007 those responsibilities were transferred to the Ministry of Justice under the lord chancellor .

Home Secretary (informal) The Right Honourable (UK and the Commonwealth)

The Home Secretary (the full, formal title of the job is, ‘Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department’) is responsible for quite a bit, including the police in England (except for the British Transport Police, which are the responsibly of the Transport Secretary, the Ministry of Defence Police (guess who's responsible for them?!?) and the Civil Nuclear Police) and certain other policies not given to other departments of government. The current incumbent is the Rt Hon Priti Patel MP (Con, Witham), who has held the job since 2019. The post is one of the Great Offices of State - the others are the Foreign Secretary, prime minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer (the only one of the four never to have been held by a woman is the Chancellor - the prime ministership has
I think in the beginning Meghan (MM) was viewed positively here in the UK, especially by people in the younger age group - she was an actress, was into fashion, had a lifestyle blog and was marrying her Prince Charming. However, it does seem that each time she is in the spotlight for whatever reason, she loses a certain group of people who previously viewed her in a positive light, to the point where, presently, her popularity appears to be diminishing slowly, but surely.
Firstly, there were some people who were 'turned off' by issues surrounding the engagement. The couple appeared, as all newly engaged Royals do, in a televised interview. People complained that MM frequently talked over Prince Harry and also did most of the talking and in a very strident way - which Brits aren't used to at
because her bullying of people has attacked very unfairly people who are manifestly of greater importance in the world than she is - like the Queen, the Duchess of Cambridge, the two York princesses, or involving people who, though temporarily in what she perceived as an ‘inferior’ position, were actually of better quality and worth than she, like royal staff members, some from families which had served the crown for generations, whom she treated like field hands ‘because she could’. She also behaved very badly to the nannies who were actually looking after the child Archie, so that they left in short order. On the whole, if you are a professional nanny, you would consider working as such for a member of the royal family a peak of achievement and close friendships have been built up betwee
Firstly you need to go into politics.
It used to be the case that politicians would start on some local government role, and then move into national government. So, for example, my local MP was a member of the county council, then Leader of his party’s block on the county council.
Then you get selected as a candidate for an MP slot at some election
It is possible to run as an independent, but pretty much every MP does so on the basis of being the official candidate for one or other party.
Once in a while, someone who’s never been involved in local politics gets selected as a candidate. Generally, they’ve been prominent in some other area…
Then you have to win your election and become an MP
This one isn’t legally true, since theoretically the Prime Minister could appoint you to a role even if you
The Home Secretary doesn’t usually have to entertain foreign leaders or diplomats, unlike the Prime Minister or the Foreign Secretary.
Chevening House in Kent, which is a private estate held in trust, is available for the use of a minister, or a member of the Royal Family, nominated by the Prime Minister.
It’s very often used as a country residence for the Foreign Secretary, but there’s no reason in principle why it couldn’t be used by the Home Secretary.
Dorneywood in Buckinghamshire is a similar property, sometimes used as a residence by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Once again, there’s no reason why it couldn’t be used by the Home Secretary if it was felt that such a residence was needed.
James Callaghan holds that slightly dubious honour. Dubious because it tends to imply you were around the top of government for a long time without ever impressing anyone as an expert on anything.
Jim Callaghan was slightly older and certainly intellectually overshadowed by his leader in three of those roles, Harold Wilson, and never really expected to succeed him. When Wilson resigned suddenly on health grounds he was not seen as a major threat by either the left or right wings of the Labour party so he was pretty much the only practical choice for Prime Minister, he didn’t make a great job of it sadly.
In the most general terms, he or she is head of the Department responsible for looking after ‘The Home Islands’ and is their representative at ‘the top table’ (cabinet) and within Parliament.
However, a number of functions that apply to ‘The Home Islands’ (such as Education, and Health) are now the responsibility of other Departments or Offices within the Government, or are controlled by the ‘Regional Assemblies.’
The main function of the Home Office today is ‘Law and Order,’ it also has a number of ‘historical functions’ that have not been found any home elsewhere.
That’s easy. Her job is to hold secret meetings with senior Israeli government representatives when she is holidaying in that country for purposes which only she can fathom. When she returns from holiday, her job is to mislead Parliament and then - because she is honourable (sic ) - resign, knowing that she will return to Government and occupy the post which she now enjoys.
The Home Secretary is the Minister for the Interior, security for the interior. But a few years ago the prisons department was made into another ministry to cut the Home Secretary’s work load. But the Police department remains part of the Home Secretary’s remit.
That's currently Dominic Raab. His apparent qualification for this post, in common with most cabinet positions, is that he makes his boss, Boris Johnson, sound coherent. This is a very low bar.
Who really cares ? She and Harry needs to make enough to support that giant house they have and Archie .If that happens or their Netflix deal works out or not work out is their business and not any of ours. I wouldn't want the bills that the big house they bought runs up every month .
