A British couple managed to raise tens of thousands of pounds to prevent a local African football team from going bust.
Crispin Mason-Jones and his wife, Dr. Ellie Bond, have helped a local sports club in the remote community of Mfuwe in Zambia. The cause was especially close to Bond's heart since she was born in Zambia.
Mason-Jones, 60, is a retired architect from Newcastle, UK while his wife is a doctor. The two had travelled to the region to offer their services. Bond was on a sabbatical from her role as a palliative care specialist when she got word of the football team's troubles. She then decided to do whatever she could to help the team.
They have since delivered £1,000 worth of black-and-white strips and 21 pairs of junior football boots to the under-15 side. The boys used to play barefoot on the local ground.
"It feels good. This is my first ever pair of boots. I supported Man Utd, my team will be Newcastle Utd now," 14-year-old Bished Njolovu, told The Mirror.
Patrick, senior team manager for the last five years, spoke about how the couple's effort has come as a ray of hope for the players. "We could not afford transport to our games because they were so far away. We would walk the streets asking for money, but it was very expensive for the bus and fuel," he said.
"Sometimes we travel four hours there and four hours back which is very difficult. Now we are guaranteed to get to all our games and have the new kit as well," he added.
He also explained how the game has saved the boys and the girls from taking to nefarious activities. "Through football they keep fit and have something to fill their lives," he added.
"This is a dream come true, a light which has shone in the darkness thanks to the people from England." The financial aid encouraged women to also come forward, and now they also have a women's football team.
"Our sponsors from Newcastle wanted to support women's football and asked if there was a women's team. So we are all very happy that there is one now," said Mason-Jones.
It was not just the couple who contributed to help the club, but their friends from Newcastle and family members also did their bit to give wings to the dreams of these youngsters.

Here at BHT we love to celebrate romance, so we thought we would take a look at some of our favorite loved up Britons. Britain has produced some of the most famous romances of all time, here's our picks.
With a huge amount of acting pedigree between them, Damien Lewis and Helen McRory are one of the most talented couples on our list. Lewis, a Golden Globe winner, is perhaps best known for his roles in Band of Brothers or Homeland, while McRory will be recognized by many fans for her role as Polly Gray in Peaky Blinders . As well as this, she has appeared in Fantastic Mister Fox , the Harry Potter series, and Skyfall. The couple has been married for 12 years and shares two children together.
One of the first couples of their kind, David and Victoria Beckham, has been through it all. Hounded by paparazzi since the very beginning, the couple has managed to stay together despite the intense media scrutiny of their relationship. The couple met early in their careers', while Victoria was a star with the Spice Girls and David was well on his way to fame with Manchester United. 20 years and four children later, the couple are still going strong.
While they may be the youngest couple on our list, they're still one of our favorites (we may have mentioned them once or twice before). The Duke of Sussex married Meghan Markle in May of 2018 in a landmark ceremony which received a huge amount of media attention. The couple are expecting their first child together later this year.
We never said our couples couldn't be fictional! Everyone's favorite functional-not-functional couple is famous across Britain and beyond for their explosive and argumentative marriage. Perhaps not the most affectionate couple on our list, Sybil and Basil were not particularly prone to declaring their love for each other. We appreciate the couple not for their loving relationship, but for their ability to make us laugh while observing it.
One died, one survived, two divorced, two beheaded. This one is for the singletons; it could be worse.
Surprise! Married in November of 1947, it's safe to say that these two have the longest standing marriage out of anyone on the list. The couple received over 2,500 wedding gifts for what was to that point the biggest wedding of its time. Interestingly, several of Prince Phillip's German relationships were not permitted to attend the wedding, due to the lingering tension following the end of WWII. After 72 years of marriage, these two have shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon!

A British couple’s dream holiday was left in tatters after an immigration mistake left them separated on opposite ends of the Atlantic Ocean. The case highlights the discord often found between airlines and passengers.
Scott Kinghorn and Thallise Marciano had planned to spend a week enjoying the sun and sea in Cancun together. After forking out almost $3000 with popular carrier TUI, everything appeared to be going smoothly on their flight from Glasgow to the Mexican Caribbean. Neither of them could have anticipated what would happen next .
Upon arrival at Cancun International Airport , the couple found themselves separated as they moved through the immigration process. Scott, a British national, made it through smoothly and continued on to wait for his partner near the luggage collection area. When she didn’t appear after a lengthy period of time, he went back to investigate.
His partner Thallise, who is a Brazilian national living in the UK, had been pulled aside before making it to the immigration counter. Unbeknownst to her, Brazilians are required to apply for a visa to enter Mexico, unlike Brits, Americans, or Canadians, who can all receive a stay-on-arrival with no prerequisites.
Thallise was immediately informed that she would be sent home on the next flight to the UK, with no way of staying with her partner. Scott, now legally in Mexico, was prevented from going back to the holding area to help, and denied a place on the same flight as her.
To make matters more complicated, Scott was in possession of all the couple’s credit cards, cash, and even their house keys. Meaning Thallise was set to arrive back in Glasgow with no money and no way to get back into her own home.
Scott immediately began communicating with TUI in an attempt to get on a flight home as soon as possible. He’s since vented his frustration at the lack of help from the airline, who was allegedly only able to offer him a flight to Manchester, five hours from Glasgow, for an extra £400 ($520). The flight was only two days before his original flight, so he chose to stay the full length of his stay instead of losing the extra money.
He spent the rest of the week working out accommodation for Thallise from Mexico, booking her a hotel for two nights before getting his brother to leave a work trip early to pick her up. He ordered food using a delivery app for her, as she was still unable to purchase anything.
The couple is pushing to have the entire trip refunded, blaming TUI for the misunderstanding. They believe that the airline should have prevented the couple from making the booking or at least stopped Thallise from boarding on the day of the flight.
TUI have responded publicly, claiming that all customers who book flights with the company have agreed to their terms and conditions and are advised to check the immigration requirements for any country they are flying to.
A TUI representative stated “ On this occasion, Mr Kinghorn booked his holiday online and agreed to our booking terms and conditions which outlines that customers are responsible for checking if a visa is required to enter their chosen destination”.
A frustrated Scott, said of the incident
“ Thallise has anxiety and she had a panic attack on the flight home resulting in her needing medical attention. When she got back no family members were available at such short notice to collect her so I had to get her a hotel – entirely at our expense! All in all, I spent £2,500 on the holiday plus the extra costs of her accommodation in Scotland and takeouts I was forced to order her. I’ve since complained to Tui but they’re aftercare has been appalling – I can’t get through to speak to anyone”.
Anyone traveling to any country should always triple check the immigration requirements as they can change quickly.
With that said, arrivals in Cancun from most countries can now enjoy a fast-tracked entry process and an immediate 180 day stay in the country . Again, checking before departure is important, but most visitors don’t need to worry. Brazil is one of the country not eligible for this process.
