Bringing the Classrooms Together
American Councils UzbekistanWithin the framework of the Central Asia University Partnerships (UniCEN), funded by the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent and administered by American Councils for International Education, Muborak Kattaboyeva’s EDUC 301: Intercultural Competence students from Termez State University (Uzbekistan) and Gerald Maki’s English 111: English Composition class students from Ivy Tech College, Indianapolis, Indiana (US) engaged in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) program in Spring 2022. Throughout the semester, students from both classes researched the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7): Clean and Affordable Energy and delivered group presentations about specific solutions needed to be taken to reach the 2030 goals.
The collaboration lasted from February through April 2022 and consisted of asynchronous classes and assignments in Google classroom, where students had a chance to connect and involve in meaningful tasks concerning SDG 7. During the collaborative course, students from both sides also joined in 6 synchronous zoom sessions, in which students took the opportunity to connect with one another on a personal level, and held live discussions on their assigned topics and tasks.
