The Atypical actor Brigette Lundy-Paine opened up about their sexuality and came out as a non-binary in 2019.
Paine shared the news through their Instagram post of November 8, 2019. With the revelation, Paine has become one of the most prominent non-binary personalities in the entertainment industry representing the LGBTQ+ community.
On November 8, 1029, Paine made an Instagram revealing their sexuality as non-binary and emphasized how they has always known about their sexuality. Paine wrote,
I’m non-binary, always felt a lil bit boy, lil bit girl, lil bit neither. using they/them as of late n it feels right. scary af to come out n been rly putting this off. But I feel I owe it to myself and to all of us who struggle w gender. If you’re NB comment and celebrate yourself! u r beautiful and u r whole.
Talking about their identity with The Advocate, in 2018, Paine said that they had yet to figure out if they would ever date a straight man again. Further, they mentioned they she feels grateful for being a part of the expanding queer community.
Paine hasn’t yet revealed if they is romantically involved with anyone currently. Moreover, Paine maintains a low-key presence on her social media, making it harder for their fans to sneak into their love life.
However, in the past, Paine was engaged to their partner Joshua Hoover, a comedian starring on How I Met Your Mother and Action Plan .
Paine even took to Instagram to share a picture with her then-fiance. But, the post has already been deleted. Moreover, there is no updates on their relationship whatsoever, and it might suggest that the two have split their ways long ago.

Brigette Lundy-Paine, the 25-year-old actor best known for their role as Casey Gardner in Netflix’s Atypical , has come out as nonbinary.
They shared the news in an Instagram post on November 8. “I’m non-binary, always felt a lil bit boy, lil bit girl, lil bit neither,” Lundy-Paine wrote in the post’s caption. “using they/them as of late n it feels right. scary af to come out n been rly putting this off. But I feel I owe it to myself and to all of us who struggle w gender.”

Lundy-Paine joins the small ranks of public figures who identify as nonbinary, including The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ’s Lachlan Watson, The Fosters ’ Tom Phelan, Billions ’ Asia Kate Dillon, Queer Eye ’s Jonathan Van Ness, The Politician ’s Theo Germaine, singer Sam Smith , actor Amandla Stenberg , and rapper Angel Haze.
Lundy-Paine publicly came out as queer in 2018, though they had told their family before then. "I come from a very queer family," they said in an Advocate interview. "I think it was just like a teary phone call to my mom when I had my first girlfriend. And then after that it was kinda like, ‘Oh, I don't have to really tell anybody else. I just date who I want and not have to put up with it.’"
Atypical ’s third season was released on Netflix earlier this month, which sees Lundy-Paine’s character Casey exploring her own queer sexuality with another character named Izzy. In a 2018 Vulture interview , Lundy-Paine expressed that they wanted to see more “nuanced examples of queerness on TV,” and that Casey’s story was an opportunity to “give the characters a chance to figure it out and flail.” It has yet to be announced if the show will be renewed for a fourth season.
Lundy-Paine has also spoken to the general queerness of Atypical , which centers around an autistic teenager and his family. “It's about being different, feeling like you don't have a place and finding that place, and kindness and empathy," they told PRIDE . "Those are all very queer values. I also think that the Izzy/Casey storyline is really important because it's such a delicate way to reveal this love and this discovery. Because it happens so slowly, the audience is really there at every moment. It's very real."
Elsewhere in the interview, they also spoke to queer representation in other forms of media. "There's this insurgence of queer media right now that's just like so fulfilling to hear,” they told PRIDE. “I've been listening to King Princess's new album . It's an era to grow up queer and celebrate yourself.”
Outside of playing Casey on Atypical, Lundy-Paine has also appeared in the 2017 film The Glass Castle and the 2016 web series Margot Vs. Lily . They also star in Bill & Ted Face the Music , which is slated for an August 2020 release. Beyond acting, they perform in the experimental voice band Subtle Pride and work on the online art publication Waif Magazine , which they co-founded.
