A young breast cancer survivor is working to educate other young women about the disease on social media.
Aisha Patterson was still breastfeeding her fourth child when she found a lump in her breast. She said she didn’t think much of it, most likely just a clogged milk duct. When two more lumps showed up, however, she went to the doctor. To her disbelief, it was breast cancer. Patterson was only 30.
“It was absolute shock because I didn’t realize that it happened to young people,” she said.
Patterson started posting about her cancer diagnosis on Instagram when she was diagnosed . She went through 3 rounds of chemo, 6 weeks of radiation and a double mastectomy. By May 2021, she was cancer-free with a new purpose in mind.
“I want to advocate for young women, so that we get better education around breast health and also that we’re represented in the guidelines,” Patterson said.

The American Cancer Society said over the last two years, the chance of a man being diagnosed with breast cancer has increased.

Mom power! Many celebrity mothers have been vocal about their breast-feeding journeys over the years, from Bachelor ’s Lauren Burnham to Pretty Little Liars ’ Troian Bellisario .
The Bachelor Nation member exclusively told Us Weekly in July 2019 that nursing “looked so easy” but “definitely” was not, noting, “No one told me that if you’re a first-time mom, sometimes your milk doesn’t come in right away.”
“I had to supplement her with formula, and I was really upset about that,” the Virginia native explained at the time. “I didn’t give up on it, and I went to a lactation specialist when I was dealing with painful engorgement issues. She helped teach my baby how to latch properly and after that, everything’s been great.”
The former reality star and her husband, Arie Luyendyk Jr. , welcomed daughter Alessi in May 2019, followed by twins Senna and Lux two years later.
Burnham called breast-feeding twins “one of the hardest things” she has ever done in August 2021. The Shades of Rose designer wound up in the hospital the previous month with mastitis , breast tissue inflammation that can result in an infection.
“Hate this for her,” the former Bachelor said on his Instagram Story in July 2021. “She’s been through a lot this week. … Really tough last few days.”
Bellisario also suffered from mastitis while breast-feeding her eldest daughter, Aurora, born in October 2018.
“It has been a joy, an honor and a no brainer to feed my daughter this way,” the actress wrote via Instagram of her “complicated” relationship with nursing in August 2019. “My body has made it easy for us and I have loved every moment I get to spend this kind of time with her. Not every mother gets that. I don’t know if I will have it for much longer, but I will always take care of her and do what is best for us. (F–k pumping. Love you forever babay girl).”
The Los Angeles native, who is also the mother of daughter Elliot, noted that her “milk came in immediately” the first time around and Aurora “has always eaten well.” Bellisario added, “Breast-feeding her was never painful or frustrating (SO RARE).”
