New Girl fans saw Jess meeting different men, among those Ryan Geauxinue, Jess’ coworker, and while he was quite charming, their relationship wasn’t well-received by the audience. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl debuted on Fox in 2011 and was very well received from the beginning, with critics praising its sense of humor and the performances of its main cast, particularly those of Max Greenfield and Jake Johnson. New Girl came to an end in 2018 after seven seasons and a lot of ups and downs in the lives of the main characters.
New Girl followed Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) , a young, bubbly teacher who moved into a loft with three strangers she found on the internet after discovering that her boyfriend was cheating on her. Adapting to a new roommate isn’t easy, but after a period of adjustment, Jess ended up being very close to her roommates Schmidt (Greenfield), Nick Miller (Johnson), and Winston (Lamorne Morris) , with her best friend Cece (Hannah Simone) also joining the fun. New Girl also saw Jess adapting to being single and dating again, and she dated different men throughout the series, and one of her last relationships before getting back together with Nick was with a man named Ryan.
In New Girl season 4 , viewers met Ryan Geauxinue (Julian Morris), a science teacher from England who started working at the school Jess was also working at. As she was vice-principal, she implemented a non-dating policy with faculty members, which became very hard to follow once she met Ryan. As hard as she tried, Jess ended up giving in to her feelings and started dating Ryan, but the couple didn’t have the desired effect on the audience, who have complained about this particular pair. Ryan was charming and got along well with Jess, but this was supposed to be Jess’ first serious relationship since breaking up with Nick, and the chemistry between them wasn’t there and ended up feeling forced.
Ryan appeared in just seven episodes of New Girl , and during that time, the writers tried too hard to sell the Jess/Ryan pair, and it became a very forgettable relationship. Many fans have pointed out that their “I love you” moment didn’t feel sincere, and from there, things went a bit too fast with them. In Ryan’s final episode, “The Crawl”, he asked Jess about moving in together, after which she panicked, further proving that their relationship was moving too fast. She ended up being convinced by the idea, but Ryan then revealed that he had been offered a job as headmaster of a school in England. Although they tried to keep a long-distance relationship, what marked the end of their relationship was him not showing up for the wedding of Jess’ father, and so Ryan wasn’t mentioned again. This was also criticized by New Girl fans, as it seemed like an easy and cheap way to put an end to their relationship, once more rushing through it and jumping onto the next thing.
As mentioned above, Ryan ended up being one of the most forgettable boyfriends Jess had in New Girl , more so as he appeared in between two of Jess’ most memorable relationships: that with Doctor Sam Sweeney, and then with Robby McFerrin, who turned out to be her third-cousin. Ultimately, Jess and Ryan’s relationship didn’t affect her arc, as she moved on with her life and ended up forming a family with Nick, but some viewers feel it was a waste of time.

New Girl saw its lead character, Jess, leave for a couple of episodes in season 5, with Megan Fox's Reagan filling in for her. Here's why.
Jess Day was the lead character in New Girl , but she left for a while in season 5 – here’s why. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl made its debut in 2011 and came to an end in 2018 after seven seasons. New Girl stood out for its tone, sense of humor, and the performances of its main cast (particularly Max Greenfield and Jake Johnson), which immediately won critics and audiences over.
New Girl followed Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel), a bubbly, young teacher who, after finding out that her boyfriend was cheating on her, moved into a loft with three complete strangers: Nick Miller (Johnson), Schmidt (Greenfield), and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.), who was quickly replaced by Winston (Lamorne Morris) , though he came back later on. Aside from that, the main cast was the same throughout the whole series – except in season 5, when Jess left for a couple of episodes.
In the third episode of New Girl Season 5, “Jury Duty,” Jess leaves her loftmates after being summoned for jury duty. As it was a high-profile case, the jury had to be sequestered at a nearby hotel for a month. Her absence brings in a new leading lady, Reagan Lucas (Megan Fox), a pharmaceutical sales representative whose travels result in her staying in LA, specifically in the group's apartment. While she stays at the loft, she discards her mysterious persona, develops friendships with the gang, and becomes Nick's new love interest as well. Although Jess' departure turns out to only be for six episodes and Reagan also exits New Girl , it still seems unusual for the show's star to leave mid-season. As it turns out, it is Zooey Deschanel who needed a break at the time.
Deschanel was heavily pregnant in the first few episodes of New Girl season 5. The show proceeded to production immediately after finishing season 4 in order to maximize her presence before she went on maternity leave. Even though the costume department did what they could to dissimulate her pregnancy, she still had to go on leave after giving birth to her daughter in July 2015. Initially, showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether considered a different storyline to cover for Deschanel's absence, which involved her moving in back to Oregon and staying with her family. However, dropping everything to spend time with her family does not seem plausible for Jess' character, as she is portrayed as often calling and emailing with her parents.
Although it was initially weird not having Jess around, the writers of New Girl handled Deschanel’s absence quite well by bringing Reagan, who was more than just a replacement or fill-in as she played an active part in the storylines of Nick and Jess, which allowed her to come back in season 6. Ultimately, Jess’ absence in season 5 also helped her relationship with Nick and made it possible for them to get back together for good by the end of season 6.

Elizabeth Meriwether's sitcom New Girl introduced Megan Fox's Reagan in season 5, who became a regular in season 6 but did not return for the finale.
Elizabeth Meriwether's sitcom New Girl introduced Megan Fox’s Reagan Lucas for six episodes after Zooey Deschanel left on maternity leave - but while she returned later on, she didn't say forever. Reagan was popular among fans of the series and became a recurring character throughout season 6. Considering the character was introduced as a filler for Deschanel’s Jessica “Jess” Day , her story arc was never intended to last long and, as a result, Fox left the show when season 6 wrapped.
In 2011, the series premiered and introduced Jess, the quirky school teacher who moved to Los Angeles in the aftermath of a tumultuous break-up in order to find herself. When her journey begins, she moves in with three dysfunctional and unique men: Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston Bishop (Lamorne Morris). As the series progresses, Jess goes through various relationships, falls for her roommate Nick, and lives her life for herself. In New Girl season 5, episode 3, “Jury Duty”, she is called for a six-episode long jury duty summons. When Nick rents out her room to pay for Schmidt’s bachelor party, Reagan enters the picture.
Nick and Reagan hit it off and form a romantic relationship with one another. Once Jess returned, the story arc for Fox’s character seemed to come to a close but was reignited in season 6 - and Nick’s romantic interest in Reagan caused drama between the roommates for 22 episodes. By the end of Reagan and Nick’s relationship, he discovers his true feelings for Jess and vice versa. The two end up together, just as every fan of the show had hoped. Fox only returned to New Girl after popular demand, but her character arc always had definite end planned.
Ultimately, Megan Fox’s character Reagan Lucas played her part in creating tension for the series as it was nearing its end. After approximately six years, New Girl season 7 closed the book on Jess’s story. As the will-they-won’t-they trope continued to play a major role in the program, Nick and Jess’s relationship grew stale. The addition of Reagan reinvigorated it by creating a new layer of the possibility that they probably wouldn’t end up together. Furthermore, she is the exact opposite of Jess which makes her nearly perfect for Nick.
For better or worse, Jess and Nick were always meant to wind up together, they just needed the additional push of Fox’s character to get to where they were. By the time the two main characters express their love for one another, New Girl had no reason to keep Reagan as a cast member. She served her purpose and was no longer needed. Undoubtedly, Fox was also ready to move on. Her personal life was expanding with the birth of her third son, Journey River Green, in 2016 and she chose to focus on feature-length films over TV programs.
New Girl’ s Reagan Lucas was essential for the development of the other characters, and Megan Fox didn't leave due to anything other than her character's story running its course in season 6. Her character chose to take a cushy job elsewhere - her dream job - which meant she didn't exit on a bad note. After season 7, New Girl came to a close with Nick and Jess happily married and moving towards building their future together.
