Getting a wax should never have been gender-specific, but unfortunately it has been for a long time. Now, as the world opens up, men can reap the benefits of longer-lasting hair removal, even in the pubic region. So if you're a man new to the world of "Brazilian" waxing, and a little hesitant, allow us to brief you on the process.
Some men who shave their pubic regions are now opting to avoid the itchy "five o'clock shadow" that develops down there, and going for a longer-lasting, smoother solution. People who often bare it all—like swimmers and body-builders—tend to get all of their body hair removed, especially before competition. But really, some guys just dislike their body hair, and want the same treatment.
If it's your first time getting a professional wax, you should know a few things before showing up. Obviously, the most important thing is that you're freshly showered—as the wax will likely take more to the grime on your body than it will the actual hair. However, skip on any kind of lotion, as you'll get better results when your skin is less oily. Note that clean doesn't mean freshly shaven: your hair should be at least 1/4 of an inch long, which makes it long enough to lie flat on your skin. Don't shave your pubic area for at least two weeks before your appointment, in order to ensure that your hair is long enough.
Conversely, if you've "let it go" down there and it seems out of control, don't worry. The esthetician will trim any excessively long hairs before the removal process. This isn't exactly a lunchtime procedure though, and changing back into a business suit could be pretty uncomfortable afterwards. So if possible, wear loose clothing and schedule it on an off day to prevent irritation in the post-wax phase. If you're nervous, try to understand plenty of people do this all the time. Experts say the more relaxed your muscles are, the better your hair removal results will be, so just go with the flow.
Hopefully, you knew this before booking your wax, but you will be asked to remove your underwear in the treatment room. Removing your underwear both protects your clothing and provides an optimal canvas for the technician to remove all that hair you don't want. Men also usually have the option of a disposable thong to wear during the treatment.
First, your technician will cleanse the area to eliminate potentially dangerous bacteria that may exist on your skin, and to help prevent ingrown hairs. Then, they will check the hair length and trim accordingly for safety purposes, as well as to your preference. They will also ask you about where you would like to leave hair, and how much of it you would like to leave.
Next, your technician will perform the actual waxing. There are several wax types and options. For example, it may involve spreading hot wax on the area where you want hair removed, attaching a strip to the wax, and then pulling the strip and the wax off. This removes all the hair, down to bare skin. That said, technicians often use hard wax for sensitive areas (which does not involve a strip). A pre-waxing oil also allows the wax to shrink-wrap around the hair and not attack the skin. This is a less painful option.
Expect it to hurt when the strip is pulled off, especially if you have sensitive skin or a low pain tolerance. But it does tend to get easier and less painful with each appointment. After you are as bare as you want to be, your esthetician will apply soothing lotions that contain aloe vera to lessen the pain. Your technician will then present you with a mirror, to view the result and give approval, as well as check for any stray hairs. If you don't like something, speak up. You're paying for a service.
After this, you're done, and can go about your usual activities. Make sure to listen to your technician's instructions on aftercare. And remember, If this is new for you, treat your "Brazilianed" bikini like you would any other haircut. Try it out for a few days and then decide if you like it. Luckily, hair grows back.
