Lizzy Martinez, the 17-year-old student who was reportedly told to use Band-Aids to cover her nipples by an official at her school , is using the situation to spread awareness about dress codes. Earlier this week, Lizzy staged a “bracott” protest, encouraging girls to go braless and to clip a bra to their backpacks . She also suggested that boys could participate by placing Band-Aids over their nipples and on top of their shirts.
“Support the #bracott,” Lizzy wrote on Twitter , accompanied by a poster promoting the protest. Several users rallied around Lizzy’s efforts. One wrote, “This is so great! I plan to participate in the #bracott and will share info about it w/all my friends. Thanks for your work, Lizzy.”

Another added, “I totally support what you are doing and don’t listen to anyone who tells you otherwise! If someone was staring at you or objectifying you because of your body, they should’ve been the ones to get sent to the office, not you. The teacher and your school system should be ashamed.”

In case you need a quick refresher on how the whole situation went down: Lizzy said she decided not to wear a bra since she had sunburned shoulders. After a male classmate reportedly called her out , Lizzy allegedly faced an uncomfortable encounter with Braden River High Dean Violeta Velazquez, who ultimately decided that the Band-Aids were the solution.
On Twitter , Lizzy wrote, "I decided not to wear a bra today and got pulled out of class bc one of my teachers complained that it was a 'distraction to boys in my class.' My school basically told me that boys’ education is far more important than mine and I should be ashamed of my body."
Speaking to Teen Vogue , Lizzy shared how the protest turned out. “Almost every girl I talked to wasn’t wearing a bra,” she claimed. When asked to comment on Monday's event, however, Michael Barber, the school's director of communications, told us that, "The day was completely uneventful and no Braden River High students were disciplined in any for anything to do with the alleged protest."
While it's certainly been a whirlwind week with plenty of possible lessons, what’s one of the main things Lizzy says has learned from all this? “Not to read the comments,” she said. “Some people are awful.”
