Now a change agent, Sekgobela carries an empty box of matches every day as a reminder that he cannot go back to using drugs. The father of two children, who resides in Brakpan, said he has made plenty of bad decisions over the 10 years of his active addiction that left him hopeless and broken. He started experimenting with drugs at a tender age and got worse when he started his tertiary education. I started trying ecstasy with my friends at res. We went on to smoke crystal meth, cocaine, Cat and rock, and it became an ongoing thing. Eventually, I found myself regularly going to Midrand to buy cocaine. I then realised this is becoming a habit. I started selling ecstasy at tertiary and res because it was in demand and I was making extra pocket money. Some died and some were arrested at res by police who were doing random searches. I went back home to stay with my grandfather in Thembisa. Gradually, the fall started for Sekgobela. He started stealing items from home to feed his addiction. This started to damage the relationship I had with my family. I was always on the front page of family meetings. I was clean, sober and gained a lot of weight. Everyone in my family was happy to see me in that state. I moved back to Thembisa and in less than eight months I relapsed. The problem at the time is that I also got high off my own supply to a point that I went out of stock. I was not the most reliable guy, not trusted by anyone in my community. I remember no rehabilitation centre was willing to take me at that moment. He said his addiction counsellors social workers at Witpoort were phenomenal and helped him a lot. Sekgobela is now a member of the Intsikelelo Youth Development Foundation, an organisation that assist other addicts to overcome drug addiction. There are social development offices as well as rehab centres to provide further healthcare services. The grant will support the planning of a new urban area in the Shiselweni region of the country, where population and economic activities are expected to grow quickly over the next few years. The project will generate approximately , jobs for workers, creating the need for housing, health and education services for workers and their families. The Shiselweni region faces the highest level of poverty in the country yet is very suitable for agricultural activity due to its rich soil. It is the driest region in Eswatini with an annual precipitation of mm per annum. Reducing drought vulnerability and developing economic activities is a priority for the government, which is planning the construction of three dams to enable irrigation. Called the Mkhondvo-Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Project MNWAP , the plan is driven by a value-chain approach which includes agricultural diversification horticulture, cotton, dry beans, oil crops that will enable agro-processing and attract new industries and workers. One hurdle will be to accommodate the influx of workers stimulated by the growth of the agro-industrial complex. A well-planned new eco-city is expected to provide high quality services for the population, stimulate economic diversification, create sustainable employment and reduce poverty in the area, while safeguarding the environment. It will also lend support to the development plan for the new Eco City and agro-processing zones linked to existing and future development initiatives.
