My son is 3yo, he's figured out that boys can stand while they pee and does really well so far. No wildly crazy aiming or trying to pull tricks like peeing as close to the rim as possible.
However, I can't get him to hold his penis while he pees. He sidles up to the toilet, drops his drawers, assumes the position and just flops out his penis then starts going. At home it's not a huge problem our home toilets are shorter than most of the public ones we've encountered and family germs dont give me the heebiejeebies as much as stranger germs. In public restrooms though, the rim comes up so high I'm always hovering and trying to hold his penis up so it doesn't touch anything.
Parents who have had this issue, how did you teach your sons that they needed to hold on to their penis while going? Just keep repeating, you've got to hold your penis buddy? Is this a guy conversation that dad should be in charge of? There's no going back to sitting now, he even gets a little frustrated when he sits down to poop and pee comes out ("We stand to pee and sit to poop mommy!"). Help!
Target practice. Men like something to aim at. Throw a piece of tp in the bowl and have him shoot through it. Let dad show him how.

Oh man, wasn’t there a story out of Amsterdam where they were having trouble with urine getting all over in the bar restrooms so they put a fly sticker on each urinal. All the gents aimed for the fly and no more messy floors.
ooooooo isn't this why parents float cheerios in the potty? To teach little boys they can aim. Sure sounds like a fun game (coming form a woman with daughters FYI).
How often does he watch dad pee? That helps a lot.
Dad needs to be more involved here. Children learn by watching.
My 3yo isn't very tall, but in public bathrooms he knows that the choices are
go into the men's room with dad/use the urinals,
go into the mens' room alone/use the urinals (he would NEVER choose this one but he's pretty trustworthy, if he wants to I'm fine with it), or
go into the women's with mom and sit on the seat.
He's just not tall enough to pee standing up at a public toilet.
Cheerios in the toilet bowl teaches them to aim.
Have him watch Dad as much as possible and we put a couple Cheerios in the toilet to aim at
I don’t really have any good advice for this. My son is also 3, he watched his dad to learn to pee standing up. My husband is very tall and doesn’t really aim with his hands? He does the lean over hand on the wall thing. My son is also tall and doesn’t tend to use his hands either when aiming. I definitely wouldn’t aim for him.
Maybe, if you’re really that worried about germs, instead of focusing on your boy, maybe bring some antibacterial wipes and wipe the rim for your son before he goes. Sounds like he has the technique down mostly, the fact that he is a little short will eventually become a non issue once he is a little taller.
I taught mine to sit down when they were littler, but that's pretty much all I've done IRT aiming other than having them clean the bathroom when they miss. I...would not be handling my toddler's penis.

Stop doing this. As a guy myself, it's not necessary to hold it in most circumstances. Unless his technique results in it going all over, I'd leave this one alone for him to figure out on his own.
As an FWIW, we taught ours to aim for the middle, and put a piece of TP in, which requires a bit more precision requiring the use of a hand.
I am a woman with a girl (always babysat girls as well, lol) so this is interesting. I had no idea that boys didn't have to hold onto it to pee for the most part. Thanks for teaching me something new today lol
My son holds his while peeing. Always has. He has been watching me. We often pee together side by side as there is room enough for two ppl around one toilet. He spills and I spill lol. And he shakes it too as I have told him too. Shake it and let the droplets fly! He is 5 and still wet his bed during the night lol. Well he does not wet it because he is wearing those pants diapers
