Grey's Anatomy delivered a Andrew DeLuca meltdown in the March 19 episode that was a long time coming , and his break came in front of some of the most important figures at Grey Sloan as well as a waiting room packed with patients. While the breakdown is presumably due to his family history and he's not entirely to blame, he needs to face some serious consequences.
DeLuca's breakdown was serious enough that his fellow doctors at Grey Sloan surrounded him, believing he was a danger, and Bailey called security on him. He quit despite her only intending to suspend him, and only Meredith's promise to dig into the case that triggered him prompted him to agree to take the suspension. He ended the episode speeding down a dark road on his motorcycle.
Admittedly, the episode did sort of give him an out, as the suspicions of human trafficking that seemed very unlikely but resulted in his break might not be so off-base as they seemed. Still, even if he was right, he didn't go about handling the case in an acceptable way as a physician at a major hospital. Right now, DeLuca seems to be a danger to himself and others. If all he receives is a suspension, it needs to last for more than just an episode or two.
While Grey's Anatomy isn't exactly known for its realism, it could use a high-stakes storyline that doesn't result in the happiest outcome possible, at least for a while. Meredith got her medical license back without too much trouble in the grand scheme of things, DeLuca got out of jail despite lying to the authorities to take the blame for Meredith, Link is the father of Amelia's baby , Alex got a happily-ever-after off-screen to explain Justin Chambers' departure, and even Jo is bouncing back from Alex abandoning her pretty well.
Too many major Grey's Anatomy stories have been tied up neatly, in my book, with the only major exception being the love triangle currently going on with Owen/Teddy/Tom, and even that was recently downgraded from the five-person mess that was more or less a love pentagon. DeLuca needs to face some consequences both for a touch of realism and to raise the stakes on Grey's Anatomy .
Those consequences don't need to be being permanently fired from Grey Sloan, because that's unlikely to happen short of Giacomo Gianniotti leaving Grey's Anatomy . After all, DeLuca has a family history of mental illness, so he could be stabilized with the right medication, treatment, and willingness. Even if he does prove to be right about the human trafficking, his outburst was scary and not at all appropriate. He could have started by calling the hotline, like he asked Meredith to do!
That stabilization shouldn't happen overnight, and he shouldn't be allowed near patients until Bailey is 100% positive that he's ready. At the very least, he shouldn't be allowed to perform surgeries. Honestly, watching DeLuca go through a process of recovery could be more compelling than just more doctor drama at Grey Sloan. For a show that could be getting long in the tooth as it fast-approaches its seventeenth season, why not try something new?
Ever since watching Giacomo Gianniotti crush DeLuca's meltdown in the latest episode, I've been of the opinion that DeLuca is getting the kind of meaty storyline that Alex Karev deserved in his last hurrah on Grey's Anatomy . There's definitely enough substance to this storyline that it can carry on and force DeLuca to deal with consequences on-screen, and I for one am crossing my fingers that his journey is as long as possible to keep this arc compelling.
While Grey's Anatomy Season 16 may be considerably shorter than intended due to the coronavirus pandemic , the show isn't out of episodes yet. Be sure to tune in to ABC on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET ( following Station 19 at 8 p.m. ET) for new episodes of Grey's Anatomy .

The relationship is intriguing for a variety of reasons.
Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy is set to debut in September, and new and old fans alike are wondering whether Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo) will hold onto her new flame , Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti).
The relationship is intriguing for a variety of reasons. Meredith has struggled to form a lasting bond with someone ever since Derek Shepherd died in Season 11 . DeLuca, who has spent Seasons 12 through 16 bouncing around in his dating life, is desperate for steady romance. The two were originally never meant to be together romantically and yet here we are.
On top of all of this, Meredith and DeLuca have a significant age difference. She’s around 40-41 and DeLuca is about 29. This 10-year gap is nothing to sneeze at for Meredith, who has mainly dated older men. However, the Grey’s Anatomy showrunners are looking to change the dialogue around age gaps and challenge their audience to accept love as love. But have Grey’s fans been accepting of this new development?
Grey’s Anatomy fans had their hearts ripped from their chests when Derek Shepherd died near the end of Season 11. Many argued that as soapy and dramatic as Grey’s has been, Derek’s death was far too jarring . Plus, McDreamy was a show staple that many fans were not willing to let go of.
With such a fresh heartbreak over one of the show’s most beloved characters, it’s no surprise that fans were reluctant to welcome Gianniotti’s character into the fandom. Gianniotti had a great deal of work cut out for him, as he had to convince the Grey’s Anatomy audience that he was worthy of more than one season and that his character was likable.
“I came in directly after they killed off Patrick Dempsey [Dr. Derek Shepherd] so there was this weird stigma that I was replacing him, which is not true at all,” Gianniotti said in an interview, according to the New York Post .
Furthermore, DeLuca had a rocky entrance. When he first arrived at Grey Sloan Memorial at the end of Season 11, he announced that he was not only a doctor, but “actually, a surgeon.” He also had a suit on, so the other doctors assumed he was an attending. DeLuca then got ostracized by the other interns after his true status as a fellow intern was revealed.
Though many long-time viewers vowed to never watch Grey’s Anatomy again after Derek’s death, (one Twitter user named Natalie Brodie said in 2015 that the show had ruined her life) those that stuck around began to see DeLuca as more than a Derek Shepherd replacement. He was charming, handsome, and as Refinery writer Rebecca Farley put it , “a bit of an idiot.” His looks and personality eventually won him a place in the fandom’s heart and soon enough, he graduated from tentative newcomer to series regular.
“I’m just a new character on the show. I’m not filling any void,” Gianniotti explained in the 2016 New York Post interview. “I’ve been getting those crazy tweets: ‘He’s not Derek,’ ‘He’d better stay away from Meredith.’ But Andrew won’t have any [romantic] intentions with Meredith, so fans don’t have to worry about any threat.”
For a decent amount of time, Shonda Rhimes and her fellow showrunners honored that promise. DeLuca got into his own trouble without the help of Meredith. He moved in with Arizona Robbins after the other interns ostracized him. He dated Maggie Pierce for a hot minute, only to break up with her in order to “keep things professional.” He developed feelings for Jo Wilson, which led to Alex Karev (long-time cast member Justin Chambers) beating him within an inch of his life. He rekindled a romance with his ex, Sam Bello.
Well, fast forward to Season 14, when the Grey’s Anatomy writers decided that enough time had passed since Derek’s untimely death. At Jo and Alex’s wedding, DeLuca drunkenly kissed Meredith after she tried to save him from a miserable wedding speech. Meredith originally brushed off the kiss as a moment of inebriated affection but did tell DeLuca that it was flattering.
Exploring a romance between DeLuca and Meredith in Season 12, right after Derek’s death, would have been strongly rejected by fans and frankly, unrealistic in terms of character development. Waiting until the end of Season 14 seemed to be the right move, as DeLuca was more established. Plus, both he and Meredith were single. (And when two doctors on Grey’s Anatomy are single, they might as well try it out, right?)
So far, the formula seems to have worked. Though some fans do seem to be bothered by Meredith's antics and the significant age difference, many are choosing to accept it as it is. In fact, Grey’s Anatomy showrunners have claimed that one of their goals in this relationship is to de-stigmatize older women dating younger men, especially since older men dating younger women is more common on TV shows.
"All the time on television you see older men with younger women and it is so common that it isn't even a thing that people notice," showrunner Krista Vernoff told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019. "It was not a conversation that Derek was so much older than Meredith. It was just that he was the senior surgeon. The age difference wasn't a conversation. I find it delightful to have the opportunity to flip that script. And when people buck against their age difference, my response is to say, 'So? Let's not fall into weird stereotypes.' People are people—and people fall in love."
So, what does this mean? Will DeLuca and Meredith stick together in what may be the final season of Grey’s Anatomy ? We’ll have to tune in this September to find out.

What is so WRONG with Deluca & Meredith being together??? (Spoilers)
The subreddit for all your Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice Discussion! The show was created by Shonda Rhimes and it premiered in 2005 by ABC.

From what I can understand everyone hates them together, mostly for the same two reasons.
• it’s out of character for Meredith Or •Deluca is too young and “childish” which goes one or two ways, either ppl find this creepy (which I don’t understand) OR annoying because they want Meredith to have a real relationship.
Let me start off by saying i disagree with all statements.. i love Meredith but she’s always so uptight it’s unnerving, she’s always been like this. Until lately, I see a different side, she seems calmed and like she’s enjoying her life. Almost like this “childishness” in Deluca has brought out this fun, carefree side of her, that has not been the case for her in a long time... like their scene in the guest room together, I think It was out of character for her and I LOVED It. What is wrong with changing as a character? No one is saying that Deluca has to be end game cause I’m almost certain he will not be, but for the time being.. why is It that bad?? No he’s not Derek, no one ever will be.
My main key point tho is, you do not need to like them together BUT
Deluca is old enough to be a surgeon, he is old enough to be in a relationship. I don’t know if we are watching the same show but I have not seen One childish thing about him? He’s kind as can be, respectful, hard worker, optimistic.. he handled that situation with Alex wonderfully. He’s compassionate to the people around him. Hell, his sister seemed to bother him more with her sleeping around. & as well for all the people saying he’s always in love... how is this true? He deff never claimed to be nor was in love with Maggie? They dated for a min. He was there for joe at a pivotal time in her life where she was speaking of how she was abused, she confided in him because he knew. So is It really that surprising he got some feelings for her that, went away pretty quickly? And as for SAM, they were in love, and didn’t work out. He was heart broken about It and moved on like NORMAL ppl.
I don’t find Deluca childish in the slightest I see a good guy, who at times could have clouded judgment because he’s a bit lonely. If they’re together for now It doesn’t bother me at all.
I don't have a problem with the age, in fact it annoys me everytime I read the typical "She could be his mother" or "He is too young for her", it also doesn't bother me much that he is quite 'inmature' I know far to many people who were a mess and what I would have never thought to be good 'parent' material get togheter with people with children and shifting and doing it pretty good.
My problem with it is the way it was developed, Deluca never cared for Meredith or was interested in her, neither did Meredith. He got beat up by Alex, and Meredith didn't care or have some consideration because she was 100% in Alex side wich as wrong at it was I can get then flashfoward to the end of S14 he randomly kisses her while drunk and upset about his ex and somehow they can't stop thinking about each others? He also wasn't cocky or pushy (that I remember) and now he got a back story that fits with Mer's.
If they have developed just the funny/carefree that they have showed in the last two episodes IMO it would have been better but well.

I read recently where Krista admitted that they didn't plan this storyline initially (back in season 14) but decided to go for it in season 15, hence why it feels like it's come out of nowhere.

At the wedding of the guy who beat him up and the woman he was in love with just before Sam!
I actually don't understand some of these people, they say Meredith and DeLuca never cared about each other and their thing just kind of happened randomly. I'm sorry but have these people never had that happened to them in real life? Have you never woken up one day and someone who you never thought about suddenly just looks really attractive to you? It wasn't even that random for MerLuca, he kissed her when he was drunk and he started to look at her differently after that. That is so plausible to me but maybe because I have had that experience in real life? And Mer, he started chasing after her after that incidence and she eventually let her guard down and enjoyed a bit of fun. What was so random about that? Not every relationship has to start with angst or tragedy. Meredith and Derek hooked up at the bar but before that they were strangers, "never cared for each other" either.

I absolutely agree with you! I don't think it's that weird, either. And sometimes you start noticing someone because they start noticing you... happens all the time.
I don’t find Deluca childish in the slightest
I mean, in the time we've known him, he has rented rooms from two of his bosses, and when his housing situation at Owen's broke down, he bummed around in an on-call room until his girlfriend figured it out and let him move in with him. So as far as we know, for some reason this grown man is incapable of opening up craigslist and renting an apartment like every other person in their 20s knows how to do. So I don't think it's totally out of line to question whether he and Meredith are compatible given the very different life stages they are currently in. They're both adults, so there's nothing wrong with the age difference, but a parent of three who is established in their career, financially stable, and a home owner dating someone who is still establishing themselves professionally, not making a lot of money, paying off student debt, childless, and bouncing from one rental place to another is unusual, regardless of gender. There's nothing inappropriate about it, but of course people are going to comment on the fact that it's unconventional.
That said, I agree that the most recent episode offered some insight into why this might actually work. There were a couple of scenes when they were laughing together and Meredith definitely looked more genuinely happy than she has in a long time. I don't particularly care about Meredith and DeLuca being together one way or another, but after seeing her look s
