Le déménagement (moving) is never the end of living somewhere new. There are always small problems that often require specific hardware or un bricoleur (a handyman).

I recently had to deal with un tuyau bouché (a clogged pipe) in mon nouvel apartement (my new apartment), and while cleaning up the initial flooding was annoying, learning all the new words related to les tuyaux (pipes) made me realize something about the English word plumber .
Ever since I first saw the periodic table, I was confused by how the elemental symbol for lead was Pb .
I vaguely remember learning that it had something to do with le latin , but when I was au collège (in middle school), I didn’t care too much and just memorized the symbol for l’examen (the test).
When it came time to hire un plombier (a plumber) those middle school memories came back to me as I noticed how both the English and French words are based on le plomb (lead).
This connection with le plomb not only made the periodic symbol instantly make more sense, but also shows a bit of the Roman history of la langue (the language)!
Un plombier est quelqu’un qui travaille le plombe !
A plumber is someone who works on lead!
It’s been a long time since le plomb was used for les tuyaux , but it’s cool to see how history hides itself in the origin of words .

It might not feel like fall outside, but September is here! Predictably, that means we have a new Cheese of the Month Club selection for you. This month, club members will receive:

Mountain Top from @fireflycheese : a bloomy, goaty pyramid with a layer of blue mold right under the white, fluffy surface. Creamy and musky with a touch of peppery blue flavor.

Pawlet from @considerbardwellfarm : This washed rind cow’s milk tomme has a golden, buttery paste that’s balanced and nutty at first, but boasts a bright, tangy finish.

Alpha Tolman from @jasperhillfarm : One of Jasper Hill’s classics. The rosy orange alpine-style wheels have complex layers of flavors. Depending on the wheel, you could taste milky and fruity notes, or something more meaty and buttery.

It’s always a good time to become a club member! Head over to our website to sign up. 🧀
Our founder, Anne Saxelby, was an integral part of a community of cheesemakers and cheese lovers, particularly those in New York and the greater Northeast. On September 14th, this community will be gathering to celebrate Anne, the trail she blazed for American artisan cheese, and the impact the @annesaxelbylegacyfund will continue to have on rural farming communities. Come celebrate with us!

After Anne’s passing in October, the @annesaxelbylegacyfund was created with the mission of placing young adults onto farms for month-long apprenticeships, similar to the ones Anne embarked on when she was in her 20s. Through these apprenticeships, participants gain perspective on farm life, artisan production, sustainability, and community, giving them tools they can use to make their own difference in the food industry.

33 apprentices participated in life-changing experiences this summer and funds from September’s benefit will directly support future apprenticeships!

We can’t wait to spend the evening with you and 60 of America’s greatest chefs. Get your tickets here! bit.ly/aslfbenefit Link is also in our bio.

Our ideal candidate is passionate about food and can work dynamically as part of a small team in New York. Understanding of safe food handling and basic knife skills are required. Check out Indeed.com for more details! Resumes can also be submitted to Jobs@Saxelbycheese.com

A Loire Valley style ashed log of goats' milk cheese. Bright, tart, and lemony flavors dominate this lovely traditional cheese, which takes its shape and inspiration from St. Maure. The finish of the goats' milk is smooth and clean, while the ashed rind contributes a slight mineral flavor. Cheese maker Brad Parker honed his skills as a cheese maker and goatherd in the Limousin region of France, and his experience shows through the flavor of his sublime goat cheeses. Approx. 10oz each.
