Border Guard Writes Memoir Mid-Checkpoint, Sells Copies to Evacuees

Stationed at one of Iran's busiest border crossings, a guard named Majid has begun writing his memoir between stamping passports and handing out tissues. Titled "Checkpoint of the Soul," the book chronicles love, loss, and the time he stopped a goat disguised as a diplomat. He sells handwritten copies for five cigarettes or one desperate compliment. "People want memory," Majid says. "I offer memory plus handwriting." The first print run sold out within hours. One chapter is just a list of excuses he's heard.
