So I can at least confirm that the policies here allow this content if you have permission by the person on the picture. And you can enjoy this one deviation on my gallery again ;-) All it took was: The permission file, which was attached to the deviation: A screenshot of a chat here on deviant with the person in the picture in which she stated that it was okay for me to use and post the picture. A "dispute" (the dispute button that is available for some time after your deviation is deleted) where I kindly asked them what the problem with this one deviation was, stating that I had permission attached to the deviation. The dispute was quickly and simply rejected without any individual consideration or answer. After your dispute gets rejected, the dispute button is no longer available and there is no other way to interact with deviantart moderation team on the site itself. A ticket at the helpdesk where I described the issue and where I wrote explicitly that I do have permission
Same old, same old. Either automated systems are configured really aggressive or one very zealous admin stumbled upon my account (again). This time all posts got deleted (~100 pictures). Even the one image where I had explicit permission attached to the deviation, go figure. I get the not so subtle hint though! Wait, did I say all posts? No, there is still one low resolution, cut off, preview picture online, despite the fact that you can clearly see Summer Glau with enlarged breasts on it! No clue why they let that slip. :-) Anyways: Only two weeks ago I wrote that I wanted to keep on posting - despite the danger that DA might just delete the pictures again. But I expected that it would take longer until that happened and I hoped that they wouldn't delete everything. My attempts to contact models, politely asking for their permission to create morphs, were generally met with no answer at all. And the one picture which was edited with permission got deleted anyways. In conclusion
This is only a hobby of mine, and one where I probably spent far too much time on. So I took some time off as this situation felt frustrating. What happened? In Feb '22 DA deleted pretty much everything I posted at the beginning of this year, basically a third of my gallery (41 out of 117 deviations). This is the second time this has happened to me, as DA already deleted almost half of my then still new gallery (9 out of 20 deviations) in Sep/Oct '21. As far as I can tell this has happened to many accounts of other artists here on DA during the last year, and some were/are even worse off (almost the entire gallery deleted). Why is this happening? As far as I can tell DA added a policy sometime in '21: "DeviantArt prohibits the posting or distribution of images or video [...] or otherwise intended to serve as sexually arousing stimuli which has been apparently created or posted without their permission." Hello! My nickname is dingsdongs, and I like to create Images where women have large breasts. I see the pictures I edit as artistic expression. I do not intent to disrespect anyone nor intent to cause harm in any way.
I only joined DeviantArt a few weeks ago, but I already noticed that there seems to be a rather widespread problem lately if you are a fan of Celebrity Fakes, Breast Expansion (BE), Female Muscle Growth (FMG), etc. pp.:
The entire extent of this issue isn't known to me. If it's mainly Celebrities, mainly Breast Expansion, or also Muscle Morphs?
But I stumbled upon this because I had one of my posts deleted. ( Now I know: Lucky me. Just one. )
Trying to figure out if that deletion is justified or if there is anything I can do, I quickly found out that several users report that they are affected by this. Some even have their entire deviations of several years taken down due to this .
As far is a can tell these deletions started a few months ago, summer of 2021. If someone has earlier examples, be my guest to correct me.
The artist are of course very disappointed and sad to say it nicely. I personally do this stuff as a hobby and sometimes spent several hours or even days on a single image edit. It's nice to share your efforts, get feedback, comments, favorites. To have your efforts of several years deleted from this site is surely more than frustrating.
Some users assume they are "being targeted" by malicious users reporting their posts.
But there doesn't seem to be a consensus: What exactly is the reason behind these deletions?
As far as I can tell, there are two general explanations given, which you can also see on the above links:

The second one, as seen on the screenshot by trench-lust is more specific:
Okay, sure. I guess you can argue with "Fair Use". But I doubt many people actually asked Scarlett Johansson if it's okay to create an even bustier fantasy version of her. But why does that suddenly matter? Why now?
This all raises for me these questions:
Are these deletions justified? Do these images violate policy? Did anything change? Why is it happening now?
In the past we always assumed that these kind of images are okay.
Unlike "leaked" nude pictures, which is clearly a violation of privacy, I don't believe that an image with huge breasts or muscles can seriously be mistaken to be a real image.
Thus I would argue that I don't think anyone is trying to harm the celebrities, that it is just an expression of a "what if" fantasy. Freedom of Expression and Art and so on.
These images have been posted on DeviantArt for years and years without being a violation to policy.
So what happened? What changed that they are suddenly taken down?

I found a few puzzle pieces which might shed some light on this:
I assume one could argue like this:


There is the clause " otherwise intended to serve as sexually arousing stimuli ".
Any image with bigger breasts (breast expansion) or any image with bigger muscles (female muscle) could qualify for this criteria:
(And images where the clothing is removed altogether, i.e. the celebrities are shown topless.)


Then there is also the clause "which has been apparently created or posted without their permission".
Now I am no expert in law or copyright, and I somehow doubt that there are any official court verdicts regarding Breast Expansion or Muscle Morphs.
I would argue that such image alterations should be covered by "Fair Use" in principle. But it's clear that you could argue another way and thus see it as a Policy Violation.

The policy is rather new. I don't know exactly when it first showed up, or if it matches the start of the deletions. But I checked that page via "Wayback Machine - Internet Archive". There are four records of this page in 2020 and 2021. This Policy did not exist in May 2020. The three Pages from 2021 sadly don't load for me, so I don't know for sure how old this policy is.
This is from Jul 14, 2020, so doesn't match exactly either with my assumed start of the deletions in summer of 2021
Before that change they relied entirely on users reporting policy violations. But then they apparently started using automated tools to identify policy violations.
They describe, if I read this correctly, that no automated deletions take place. That the final decision is taken by the moderation team.

- Claiming a 57% increase in successful takedowns since launch.
If I understand this correctly, they use machine learning to compare images.
To not only find exact duplicates, but also to identify ones that have been slightly altered compared to the original.
The main purpose, they say, is to detect copyright infringements.
Again, they also claim that no automated deletions take place:
As far as I can tell this is not exactly meant as a tool to detect celebrity fakes. But what it shows is:
a) They are actively working to further automate the detection of Policy Violations.
b) And they officially document that they take down a lot more posts than ever before ("57% increase in successful takedowns")
As I wrote at the beginning, I'm rather new here on DeviantArt (only joined a few weeks ago), and thus have no experience with DeviantArt Staff and Moderation Team. But when I had one of my posts deleted, I tried to figure out if there is anything you can do. Because the deletion note was note very helpful in that regard, only stating a general "Policy Violation".
Posting on the Forum is a no go. They don't want you to post about Policy Violations on the forum at all. Not in a specific case, nor to discuss it.
You can dispute the deletion with the "Dispute" Button, where you can also write text.
Another option is to go to the helpdesk and open a ticket.
Thus I tried both methods. I stayed polite and wanted to find out the specific reason, the specific policy I violated.
The answer to using the dispute button was only a repetition of the general "Policy Violation" note, which was not helpful at all.
But here is my helpdesk ticket and it's answer:
The "Manipulated Media Policy" seems to be the specific reason (see Puzzle Piece 1).
[ "Manipulated Media Policy" ] + [ More and more automated tools for policy enforcement ] = The situation we have right now.
I think it's save to conclude that it looks very bad for Breast Expansion morphs, because bigger breasts could easily be seen as "sexually arousing stimuli" and thus fall under this Manipulated Media Policy.
(Muscle Morphs without Breast Expansion could possibly be okay in that regard?)
If that is really true, then clearly this might be the end for these kind of images on DeviantArt. Moderation would have to delete anything that is actively reported. And the automated systems will likely pick up more and more over time.
Are Celebrity Fakes, Breast Expansion, Female Muscle Growth, etc. a Policy Violation in principle, because of the Manipulated Media Policy?
It would be nice to just have a clear answer from the deviant art staff, so everyone knows what exactly qualifies as Policy Violation. That way people at least know what's up. And can move on.
But I doubt that we will get much more than what I posted above.
Weather the storm. Who knows, it might not be as bad after all. Perhaps the current wave of deletions is already at its peak? Of course it might also get worse...
Or move on, find another place to post your pictures. Do you know any?
