Bogdana B

  The 2S22
Bogdana is a new Ukrainian truck-mounted howitzer. It is fitted with
a 155 mm ordnance, which is compatible with standard NATO ammunition. This is
a move for Ukrainian military, that was previously using 152 mm
howitzers. Preliminary firing trials
of this artillery system were completed in 2022. At the moment this
howitzer is sill being tested. It is not yet in service with
Ukrainian army.

  Ukrainian
artillery units suffered badly during the Russian military actions
since 2014. A lot of heavy artillery systems were lost. Currently
backbone of
Ukrainian artillery consists of a large
number of older

2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled howitzers. Around 500 of these
howitzers are in service in Ukraine, though it is unclear how many
of these artillery systems are combat ready. There are some
2A65
Msta-B towed howitzers (around 130 units) and
D-20
towed howitzers (around 130 units). Ukrainian Army also operates
relatively small numbers of

2S19 Msta-S self-propelled howitzers (up to 40 units), and

2S5 Giatsint self-propelled guns (up to 24 units). Though it is
likely that the state of the last last two mentioned artillery
system is rather poor. Furthermore there are problems
of supply of 152 mm ammunition, which is standard in Ukraine. A
couple of Ukrainian ammunition storage bases were destroyed due to
the Russian sabotage. Local production of 152 mm ammunition can not
fulfill the demand.

  Military
actions in Ukraine that take place since 2014 also revealed that
mobility and fast redeployment from firing position are the key
factors for new artillery systems. On average Ukrainian artillery
systems fired only 2-4 shells before leaving their positions in
order to avoid hostile counter-battery fire.

  Ukrainian
army tested a Czech DANA-M2 152 mm self-propelled howitzer. In 2020
Ukraine ordered 26 of these Czech howitzers. However soon after the
deal was made there were acquisitions of corruption. Current status
of these howitzers is unclear.

  The Bogdana
is fitted with a 155 mm/L52 ordnance. It is compatible with all standard NATO 155 mm ammunition.

  During the
firing trials Bogdana demonstrated a range of 40 km with ERFB-BV extended
range shells with improved aerodynamics. It also demonstrated a
range of 42 km with rocket-assisted shell. Range with a standard HE-FRAG
shell could be around 30 km. So this Ukrainian artillery system
outperforms the older Soviet howitzers and is on par with modern
Western howitzers.

  Prototype of
Bogdana was based on a

KrAZ-63221 military truck chassis. It is fitted with an armored
cab.
