Rough hands pressed your hips into the mattress. “Lay back for me, Sweetheart.” Soldier guided you back on the bed. “Relax. Let me take care of you.” His tone was quiet and gentle despite the roughness of his voice. You did your best to obey him by laying back. Your hands still rested over his, feeling the scars on his knuckles and the callouses between his fingers. It was difficult to let yourself be so vulnerable, so open, not because you didn’t trust Soldier, but because it was hard to be laid so bare before such a strong and brave man. You couldn’t see how you were worthy of Jack’s adoration.
( Imagine the human population hibernated every year like certain animals. We’d need to bulk up, obviously, or risk starvation in our sleep, so...here’s a little story about someone doing exactly that )
Guzzling the final, creamy remnants of the 72 ounce , full-fat extra-sugar mocha, Robert swayed on the front steps of the nutritional center. With this last drink his sagging belly finally loosened from its cotton prison of a shirt, a large, drooping roll now visible from his low, stretched navel all the way down to his knees. It undulated to and fro while he shifted on his aching feet, tiredly waiting for one of the center’s nurses to come greet his arrival. In the meantime he dropped the empty drink in a trash bin conveniently located to his immediate right, and then rubbed a palm over his burgeoning middle in wide, slow circles, worries returning now that he didn’t have anything to munch on.
Next week was the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and with winter came hibernation. Most folks would be asleep until spring, and with that they’d need a sufficient amount of body weight to keep them from starving in their sleep. The general rule was to add 1/3 of one’s body mass on to their regular frame as that seemed to keep the threat of starvation at bay, but for larger folks, like Robert, it could be a challenge to meet this criteria. He’d already weighed in at 415 pounds before the 45 day countdown to Hibernation began, and consuming enough to add 1/3 of his original mass to his frame was…daunting, to say the least.
Hibernation was a natural inclination, and in the months prior to the event one would become consumed with a gnawing hunger that never seemed to go away. Still, as much as he gave into this feeling, he still hadn’t consumed enough. It wasn’t like he wasn’t trying. Oh no, he’d spent the past couple weeks gorging at each and every special feast his local community hosted for this occasion. Grocery store employees knew him by name as he lumbered in nearly every day, ransacking the aisles looking for the things most likely to help him bulk up (heavy sweets, carbs, and dairy, he’d discovered, were what did it for him). Each night he tapped out with calorie-heavy liquor, and he hadn’t even touched any sort of gym equipment since last summer.
That last bit was sort of because he hadn’t wanted to, anyway. He’d been busy all summer with work, and in his distractions he’d forgotten about the impending winter until recently, when the 45 day countdown began. 45 days was, for most people, a modest amount of time to shovel in as much food as they could and gain that desired 1/3 mass goal. He, on the other hand, was trying to gain nearly 150 pounds in 45 days.
So far he’d done extremely well…if he’d started off as a much lighter person. In 45 days he’d gained 85 pounds and some change, which had done a number on his physique, making him practically explode out of his clothes. As busy as his work had kept him, he’d forgotten about buying new clothes for his wardrobe as well, and now everything was way too tight or couldn’t even begin to cover his bulk. The special pajamas he’d wear for Hibernation would fit—they were made of the softest, stretchiest material imaginable—but until he put those on, his massive thighs made it look like his pants were painted on and his upper half appeared as if he were wearing a shirt meant for infants, with the arms nearly cutting off his circulation and the hem nowhere near his navel.
His face, he knew, had bloated up immensely this year due to his haste, and he found it difficult to breathe at the moment due to his squished cheeks and heavy jowls threatening to consume his already fattened neck. Still, once Hibernation was over, he’d be back to his usual size. Every bit of discomfort was necessary for the big sleep.
Finally, the center’s front door slid open with a whoosh and a slim, pleasant looking nurse appeared in front of him with a sympathetic smile. Before her rolled an oversized wheelchair, and as she shuffled forward to Robert she beckoned him to sit down. Not everyone had the luxury of hibernating, unfortunately, but someone had to take care of the millions of people sleeping for months on end. From what Robert understood, some enjoyed the peace and quiet during the winter, while others simply didn’t mind watching over everyone else during this time.
“You must be Robert,” the nurse correctly guessed, holding the chair firm while Robert more or less plopped into the thing. Despite it’s generous seat it was still a tight fit, pushing Robert’s gut up over his trunk-like legs and sticking out before him like a ball of rising dough. He could barely see in front of him, let alone try and tuck his fat into a more comfortable position, so he meekly sat in the chair and nodded for the nurse.
“I am,” he wheezed, winded from the pressure of so much weight resting on his chest. “Thank you for having me. I know it was on such short notice, but I’m grateful your center had space.”
Indeed. Around this time of year, when people were struggling to put on the necessary weight, they turned to Nutrition Centers. They were usually booked up months in advance, and with good reason. Very few people who stayed at a center would enter hibernation without at least the minimum 1/3 mass gain. All the overtime earned at work had been sunk into this endeavor this year.
The nurse waved away his gratitude and rolled him into the center, giving him a brief tour as they meandered down the warmly lit hallways. At the front desk they made a brief stop for intake, where Robert was weighed (in the chair, of course—it’d be rude to make someone get up at this stage in the bulking process). Several nurses checked his other vitals, clucking their concerns over his inability to have reached his goal by now.
