SAN FRANCISCO ( KRON ) — A San Francisco City Supervisor tweeted over the weekend that the Blue Angels should not be allowed to fly over SF. The tweet, from SF District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston was sent out on Saturday as the city was in the midst of Fleet Week.
“The Blue Angels should not be allowed to fly over San Francisco. That’s it. That’s the tweet,” Preston tweeted at 3:15 p.m. Saturday , just as the Blue Angels were flying above the city.
San Francisco has been celebrating Fleet Week for the past seven days with the Blue Angels air show typically the marquee showpiece for the week-long event. While Supervisor Preston may not have been able to prevent the Blue Angels from flying, Karl the Fog had little trouble shutting them down.
After completing Friday and Saturday’s air shows, the Blue Angels were forced to cancel Sunday’s show due to foggy weather conditions. Fleet Week continues Monday with events that include U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ship tours at the piers and a High School Band Challenge in Golden Gate Park.
KRON4 reached out to Supervisor Preston’s office for further comment on the tweet but has yet to hear back.

The Blue Angels appointed its first female jet pilot to join the squadron on Monday.
The US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron selected Lt. Amanda Lee to be the first woman to serve as a F/A-18E/F demonstration pilot.
Lee is one of six new officers to join the Blue Angels team for the 2023 air show season.
Hundreds of women have held various roles with the Blue Angels over 55 years, but Lee is the first woman selected to serve as a demonstration pilot.
She is currently assigned to the Gladiators of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106, which is stationed at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Lee grew up in Mounds View, Minnesota and later attended the University of Minnesota — at which point she decided to enlist in the Navy. She graduated from Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois in 2007, according to the U.S. Navy.
She first worked as an aviation electronics technician and was selected to participate in the Seaman-to-Admiral Commissioning Program. She earned her commission in 2013 — the same year she graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.
Three years later, in April 2016, Lee was designated a naval aviator, the U.S. Navy said.
In 2019, Lee was one of nine female naval aviators who honored one of the first military pilots, the later Rosemary Mariner, with an all-women flyover at her funeral services.
At the time, she credited Mariner for pioneering the way for women like herself in the air forces.
“I first served as an Enlisted Sailor. I’m humbled to have come full circle, and now fly the very aircraft I used to work on as a maintainer,” Lee said. “It’s because of women like Capt. Mariner that ‘equal opportunity’ won’t be in our vocabulary in future generations.”
Lee follows Marine Maj. Katie Higgins, who was the first woman to fly with the Blue Angels. Higgins flew the team’s C-130 Fat Albert transport plane from 2014 to 2016.
Each year, the Blue Angels selects finalists from an applicant pool and interviews them during the week of the Pensacola Beach Air Show. This year’s show concluded on July 9, at which point selections were made.
“We had an overwhelming number of applicants from all over the globe this year,” said Capt. Brian Kesselring, commanding officer and flight leader of the Blue Angels. “We look forward to training our fantastic new team members, passing on the torch, and watching the incredible things this team will accomplish in 2023.”

The Blue Angels announced Thursday that the team will close its 2022 air show season with the Homecoming Air Show at Naval Air Station Pensacola on Nov. 11 and 12.
This will be the first time NAS Pensacola hosts the homecoming show since 2019. The base has been closed to everyone but Department of Defense ID cardholders since December 2019.
The theme for this year's air show will celebrate 100 years of carrier aviation.
In March 1922, the USS Jupiter was recommissioned as the USS Langley, the first aircraft carrier, catapulting naval aviation to the forefront of naval operations. This year, planes will be flying in honor of this anniversary. Chief among those flying for this celebration will be the Blue Angels.
The Blue Angels will fly at approximately 2 p.m. Nov. 11 and 12. There will not be a night show this year, but other performers have already committed to the show. A special operations paratrooper team will be parachuting out of Fat Albert, the Blue Angels’ C-130 Hercules. Other acts currently expected are:
In addition to the static displays, food and memorabilia will be available at numerous concessions stands. There will also be a kids' zone for kids of all ages.
The show will start at 9:30 a.m. both days, with gates opening at 8 a.m. This event is free and open to the public. Reserved seating will be available for an additional fee, but guests are encouraged to bring their own seating. Handicap seating and parking will be available for those in need. Parking will be laid out similar to years prior with traffic being directed to parking lots by security personnel and signs. Buses will be available to shuttle spectators to the airfield from said parking lots.
For additional information on the show and to reserve seating access, visit naspensacolaairshow.com . The site also contains a list of items that cannot brought to the show including pets and coolers.
