Čím více ho jedinec má, tím je sexuálně aktivnější. A muži ho mají až dvacetkrát více než ženy. Mnoho mužů se neuchyluje k autoerotice pouze ve chvílích osamění, ale i tehdy, když mají stálou partnerku.
Často tak ovšem činí potají, takže většina žen netuší, jak takový akt probíhá. Nedávný internetový průzkum dal ale na většinu základních otázek jasnou odpověď.
Dvě třetiny mužů masturbují pravou rukou, deset procent používá obě. Drtivá většina mužů má přitom zavřené oči, nejspíše proto, aby se lépe soustředili na svou erotickou fantazii. Z průzkumu totiž vyplynulo, že jen menšina mužů pravidelně využívá při této činnosti pornografické materiály. Velká část z nich raději spoléhá na vlastní sexuální představy. Zhruba v jedné polovině z nich hraje hlavní roli aktuální partnerka, v té druhé pak vystupují například kolegyně z práce, kamarádky nebo třeba jen náhodné kolemjdoucí, které muž ten den potkal.
Heterosexuálním mužům trvá masturbace déle než gayům, přičemž v průměru potřebují k dosažení orgasmu 62 pohybů rukou. Mnozí z nich před vyvrcholením práci rukou přeruší, a to i opakovaně, aby dosáhli co nejsilnějšího orgasmu. Ten ale i při nejlepší vůli trvá zhruba šest vteřin, což se s téměř dvacetisekundovým ženským vyvrcholením nedá srovnávat.
Přestože hlavním motivem masturbace je touha po rozkoši, po akci jsou spokojeny jen tři čtvrtiny mužů. Ti zbývající jsou spíše skleslí a rozčarovaní, případně se stydí.
