Blonde Redhead Part2 Dreams

Moving from Sonic Youth-like art punk to eclectic pop over the course of their decades-long career, Blonde Redhead remained one of indie rock's most creative acts. The band formed in 1993 after Japanese art students Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi randomly met Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace at an Italian restaurant in New York. (The name was taken from a song by the '80s no wave band DNA.) With Makino and Amedeo on guitars and vocals, Simone on drums, and Takahashi on bass, the band's chaotic, artistic rock caught the attention of Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, who produced and released the band's debut album, Blonde Redhead, on his Smells Like Records label. Shortly after the album's release, Takahashi left the band. The remaining members continued as a trio, releasing a second album, La Mia Vita Violenta, on Shelley's label in 1995.

For their 1997 release, Fake Can Be Just as Good, recorded for Touch & Go, the trio was joined by guest bass player Vern Rumsey from Unwound. By 1998, the band eliminated bass and scaled back to guitars, drums, and vocals for In an Expression of the Inexpressible. Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and the Melodie Citronique EP followed two years later. The band's first for 4AD, Misery Is a Butterfly, was released in spring 2004. For 2007's 23, the group opted for a mix of dream pop and delicate electronic textures. Three years later, Blonde Redhead delivered Penny Sparkle, a more stripped-down, even more electronic-leaning set of songs the band recorded in New York and Stockholm with Alan Moulder, Van Rivers, and the Subliminal Kid. In 2014, Blonde Redhead returned with Barragán, featuring production from Drew Brown (Beck, Stephen Malkmus, Radiohead). The band revisited its early days in 2016 with the Numero Group box set Masculin Feminin, which collected Blonde Redhead and La Mia Via Violenta along with demos, singles, and radio performances from that era. That year also saw the release of Freedom of Expression on Barragán Hard, a collection of Barragán remixes including contributions by Deerhoof, Van Rivers, Nosaj Thing, and Connan Mockasin. Blonde Redhead returned with new music in 2017 in the shape of the EP 3 O'Clock, which they released on their own Asa Wa Kuru Records. ~ Tracy Frey, Rovi

Diverse and creative indie-rockers from New York City, US, Blonde Redhead have been intriguing audiences since 1993, blending no wave, dream pop and shoegaze to create their eclectic sound.

Italian born brothers Amedeo (guitar) and Simone (drums/vocals) Pace moved to New York City after earning Bachelor's degrees in jazz, where upon the two met Kazu Makino (vocals/guitar), an art student, randomly at an Italian restaurant, deciding to form a band shortly after. Maki Takahashi joined as a bassist. Their caustic art rock soon gathered attention from Sonic Youth's drummer Steve Shelley. With Shelley acting as producer, their self-titled debut album was released on his label, Smell Like Records. Takahashi left the band shortly after, with Blonde Redhead continuing as a trio, releasing a second album, "La Mia Vita Violenta" in the same year.
For their next release, "Fake Can Be Just as Good," they were joined by Unwound's bassist, Vern Rumsey, who was a guest on the album. In their following releases, they scaled back their sound to just guitars and vocals, with "In an Expression of the Inexpressible," "Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons" and "Melodie Citronique" released between 1998 and 2000. Guy Picciotto from Fugazi assisted in the production of these albums, as well as lending his vocals to "Futurism vs. Passeism Part 2." Folowing and accident where Makino was trampled by a horse, a few years were taken for recovery. But In 2004, they had signed with 4AD, and returned to making music, coming out with "Misery is a Butterfly."
Whilst they had scaled back their sound, their music became increasingly more influenced by electronica. Their following releases continued with this developing sound, incorporated delicate textures of dream pop, making for a less chaotic listen. 2007's "23" and 2010's "Penny Sparkle" were a success, with several songs featured on television soundtracks. The band also wrote and recorded 15 tracks for the soundtrack of the film "The Dungeon Masters" in 2010.
Blonde Redhead have been going for 21 years. That’s pretty remarkable if you ask me. There’s definitely a strain in their music that harks back to the days of Sonic Youth and No Wave, although by now they certainly have their own sound, call it Alt Rock, Dream Pop, Nu-Gaze… Onstage at The Pageant they seemed a bit distant or detached. I’m told that they certainly have changed their stage presence since earlier days, but there’s still not a lot of interaction on their behalf with the audience. Not that it bothers me, their music is interesting and captivating enough without resorting to any stage antics. They’re a seasoned group, by all means, but it’s still great to hear a band sound so tight together - brothers Simone and Amadeo Pace, who are on drum/vocal and guitar duties respectively, lay down some pumping, syncopated beats, over which Kazu Makino’s ethereal voice drifts. Great sound too. Throughout the evening they play songs from their extensive back catalogue, but it’s perhaps the songs from ’23’ that gather the most enthusiastic crowd response. All the same, Blonde Redhead are totally adored by the crowd, who cheer when Kazu Mikano goes to the mic and says, in a slightly awkward way, “I feel… at home?”. There’s a lot of energy and passion in their music, along with the dream-like quality that pervades nearly all their songs, but more than anything else there’s an overarching feeling of mellowness, which is delightful.
Blonde Redhead is one of the most under-the-radar and should-be-more-praised type of bands. Ever since I was introduced to them they changed the way I see things, the way I feel things. When I saw them at Sickday Concert (health insurance for musicians) I loved them even more. To see them live, seeing how passionate and talented they are just melts my heart and they make me want to be more creative. "Misery is a Butterfly" and "23" are such great albums to get to know their style of music. Kazu Makino, the lead singer of the band is very mesmerizing. After the accident, "Misery is A Butterfly" came out and the album is about her coping with life after the surgery, her love for horses and how pain can be your strongest weapon. Overall, I think more people should listen to them and share their music with the world.
I've seen BR live at New Age (Treviso, Italy). I've been extremely satisfied by their performance, they have a great synergy on stage and they can give life to their songs when they play live. The voices are simply stunning, Kazu gives you the shivers and Amedeo is also great. Half of the set was from the albums '23' (2007) and 'Misery..' (2004), which I loved because they're my favourite albums, but I expected some more tracks from the most recent works. The only thing that disappointed me was that they skipped a song ('Anticipation', which is also one of my favourite ones), it looked like Kazu didn't feel like singing it, I got this felling from down the stage..
Anyway, BR are a band that really deserves to be seen live
Great concert! I've been a fan of Blonde Redhead since they first came onto the music scene in the mid-nineties. Luckily for me, it just so happened that Blonde Redhead was going to be playing in Chicago on my birthday, so I bought tickets right away! They played at a small, intimate venue, which was great! They sounded SO good--they are truly talented musicians that sound just as great live, as on their CDs. They played a nice, long set that had me dancing all night! I highly recommend checking them out live!
I happened to see the same tour in Paris but the songs that were played this time were more from the older albums than the new one if I remember correct. As we all know BR is a fantastic live band and how they move from songs to songs and "improvise" is a true feat. Perhaps this performance was a bit more held back this time but still it did not have a bad moment at all.
Great show. Played a nice selection of old and new songs. The band and the crowd were both on - four encore songs! Generally do not like Neumos because the sound guys play the music too loud and drowns out the singers, that was not the case last night. Sound was good for a change.
Amazing, very introspective concert. She is ridiculously talented. Her sharp voice is one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard live. The venue is very intimate, you can get super close to the state. One of my favourite concerts ever. Pure magic!
Extraordinario concierto ... confirma que escucharlos en viva supera a las versisones "controladas" de discos .... sin lugar a dudas ...los volveré a escuchar cuando vengan ... Spring and By Summer Fall ... se llevó la noche !!!!
Amazing late show, the concert was wonderful even if it was their second show of the day. It was great to see them live!!! The concert was intimate and Le Poisson Rouge was a great venue for this purpose!
