Record heat surged across the region Friday, pushing temperatures to new highs and turning ordinary afternoons into what officials called a perilous stretch for vulnerable residents. The heat blanket extended into the evening, keeping the air heavy and the pavement uncomfortably hot.

Meteorologists attributed the spike to a powerful high-pressure system parked over the area, funneling blazing sun and dry air downward. The heat index—what the air feels like to the body—reached levels that could stall outdoor activity and strain alarmingly fragile electrical grids. Authorities urged people to limit outdoor exposure, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those without air conditioning.

Public health officials reported an uptick in heat-related illnesses at clinics and emergency rooms, while hospitals prepared extra staff for the expected surge. City leaders opened cooling centers and extended public transit hours in some districts to help residents escape the hottest parts of the day. Businesses shuttered outdoor operations or shortened hours in the worst-affected zones, a move echoed by schools that shifted outdoor activities indoors.

Farmers warned of stress on crops and livestock as dry winds persisted, threatening water supplies and increasing the need for irrigation. In the urban core, air quality began to deteriorate as ozone levels rose, prompting advisories for sensitive groups to limit strenuous activity outdoors.

Forecasts project at least a few more days of extreme heat before cooler air moves in, though officials cautioned that heat waves can be unpredictable and recur with increasing frequency in coming seasons.
