- Since we know some cards are better for the player and some cards are better for the dealer, we must bet according to the potential outcome of the next hand of cards. Lesson 6, bet spread in card counting. This also means we need to adjust our bets on the running outcome of every hand following that.
First, you have to assign a value to your betting. If your usual bet is $10, we will assign a unit value of 1 for every $10. Have a look at this chart. Keep in mind every unit is $10.
True count, how much to bet? If the true count is plus 1 or lower, you're going to bet 1 unit or $10. If the true count is plus 2, you're going to bet 2 units or $20.
If the true count is plus 3, you're going to bet 4 units or $40. If the true count is plus 4, you're going to bet 8 units or $80. If the true count is plus 5, or higher, you're going to bet 12 units or $120.
Based on these charts, the true count shows that once the deck is rich in 10s, you need to increase your wagers to 12 times your initial wager. This is so you can take advantage of getting those aces and 10s left in the deck. Having fewer 4's, 5's, and 6's in the deck will help you perform better in your upcoming hand since there are less of them and your odds of making 20s is greater.
So to recap, you increase your bet or lower your bet based on the true count of every hand. Keep in mind you must be consistent in using basic strategy, and you must not miss any opportunities. The deck may never be this rich in 10s again for the rest of the shoe.
So bet big when it's hot, and lower your bet when it is not. If you count cards but play terribly, you probably won't get the result that you're looking for. Card counting, ace tracking, basic strategy, and smart, variable betting are all important to becoming a winning player.

A bet spread is a minimum to the maximum number of units you bet in a game. One unit is equal to the minimum amount you want to bet on a hand.
When the true count is high (+5 or more) and the deck is rich in high-value cards, you will want to increase your wagers. You have the advantage in the game; this is your moment to maximize your winnings.
1-12 refers to the minimum and maximum units you bet, with one being the lowest and 12 the max. Say you had $2 equal to one unit, then $24 would be your max bet with this system.
While the system above is a common approach, many blackjack players will adjust their bet spreads to their own gameplay style and bankroll size.

Betting systems follow a set pattern, and don’t take aspects like the true count or deviations into account. Most blackjack pros take elements of a betting system and adjust their bet spread when card counting in blackjack .
If 12 units stretch your bankroll too thinly, then you can use a more conservative 1-8 bet spread system. Bear in mind a more conservative bet spread also means your winnings will be smaller.

At this point I think it is necessary to give some thought to what is called ‘penetration’. Casinos nowadays never allow their dealers to deal the deck(s) down to the last card. The reason for this rule is that dealing down to the last card provides some very powerful opportunities for the Card Counter. Casinos overcome this by “cutting off” a certain amount of the deck with a plastic card known as the ‘cut card’. When the cut card comes out, the dealer finishes that round of play and then re-shuffles the deck. Penetration is the number of decks played through before the cut card appears and is usually referred to as either a percentage or a number of decks. For example, if I was playing a 6 deck game and the dealer cut off 1 and a half decks, I would refer to this as 75% penetration or 4 and a half decks. Penetration always refers to the number of decks that we get to see during play and not those left out of play behind the cut card. As a rule the more cards the player is allowed to see the better. Never play any game using 4 or more decks that offers less than 75% penetration. For single and double deck games never play if the casino is offering less than 66% penetration.
To calculate what your betting unit should be take your entire bankroll (everything you have to bet with) and divide it by 500 – this will be considered your unit. So a theoretical bankroll of $10,000 would give you a unit of $20 ($10,000 / 500). A bankroll of $50,000 would give a unit of $100.
It is VERY important at this point to emphasize that you should never play with money that you cannot afford to lose. Card Counting does give you an advantage; it does not however guarantee that you will win. Never, ever, play with money that you cannot live without. In fact if you are seriously considering learning to count cards, it is a very good idea to put money aside that will not be used for anything other than your exploits at the table.
Before going any further, it is necessary to define a very important concept – bet spread. Bet spread is the difference between the lowest and highest bets you will place at the table. If a player states that he/she is implementing a bet spread of 1-8, this means that their largest bet is 8 times the size of their smallest bet. So if their minimum bet is $10 their maximum bet is 8 times this, or $80. A bet spread is necessary in order to overcome the changes in advantage a player will experience as successive decks are dealt. An advantage player realizes the importance of betting low at times the deck favors the house and progressively higher as it swings in favor of the player. Unfortunately, bet spread is one of the main indicators used by a casino to detect card counters; it is of paramount importance that a counter has a good understanding of a particular casino’s tolerance of large bet spreads if they are to avoid detection. This is a simplistic way to explain bet spread that will serve as a general rule of thumb; it is far from perfect. Your bet spread in practice will be affected by many conditions including the rules of the game, the penetration being offered and the tolerance of a particular casino to large bet spreads.
Never place a bet in excess of 5 units on any hand you play – this will help to limit your risk of ruin and keep the positive and negative swings in your bankroll to a minimum (yes that’s right bankrolls go up and down – dramatically at times – but the longer you play the greater the chances of your bankroll remaining on the positive side of the curve). You should place your maximum bet of 5 units at a TC – after adjustment for the house advantage – of 5 or greater. Now you are aware of what your maximum bet should be and when to place it – it is easy to work out what your correlating minimum bet should be and any bet increments falling between the two extremes. To calculate your minimum bet simply divide your maximum bet by whatever spread you intend to use. So if you are playing a 6 deck game and intend to use a 1 to 12 spread, you would divide your 5 unit bet by 12. For example, a player with a total bankroll of $150, 000, playing a six deck game and spreading 1 to 12 would calculate their maximum and minimum bets in the following way:
Minimum bet: 1500/12 = $125 (or round down to $100 for ease of play and to increase you advantage slightly!)

First, the bet sizing shifts I spoke of. The idea of counting is basically that when the deck is rich in what you need it to be rich in you make larger bets. There’s no way to capitalize on the count without doing that. So alert number one.
Second, there are changes in basic strategy that come into play when the deck is rich in what you need it to be rich in. Choices whether or not to take a card are profitable that wouldn’t normally be. You can’t hide those choices. A random player making random choices won’t show the series of choices that a counter will.
The counter stands out like a person not wearing any clothes would stand out. They can’t hide what they’re doing.
My friend is pretty friendly and funny about the whole thing. She has zero hostility towards counters. She did it for years. She just has someone inform them that they’re no longer allowed to play blackjack and that their comps are invalid if they’ve amassed any significant number. One of the ways that counters cheat casinos - and in this sense they are very definitely cheating them - is by building up comps they shouldn’t be getting according to the strategy behind why the casino gives people comps for particular amounts and time periods of play.
I didn’t used to think that counting was cheating, because in itself, it isn’t. But you can’t play for higher amounts in my casino without giving them your card, and when you do that, your play, your action, triggers comps, or complimentary credits and services, which can be quite substantial. Rooms, spending money for restaurants, clubs, stores, which are normally considered part of what the casino is giving players to induce them to come back and feel that their losses aren’t so great because of that additional compensation.
But normal players are losing at a known rate or faster, whether they think they’re winning at any particular moment or during any particular period. The casino math consultants know exactly how much each player is losing for every minute they play, and all of that is part of the calculation that drives the comps. When people play for large amounts for extended periods of time, the comps can be substantial, even into the thousands of dollars or more.
Card counters playing at high stakes aren’t losing, not if they’re good - by not losing, I’m referring to the improvement of the odds their counting brings them, from losing around a percent a hand, on average, to winning a percent or two per hand. They have to play a lot of hours to realize that advantage as a tangible result, and they can go through long periods where they lose just like everyone else, but over time, they’re not losing. When they take those comps they’re getting, which are calculated based on a theoretical loss, except they’re not losing, they’re getting something from the casino under false pretenses.
I’m not on the casino’s side, I don’t particularly like the way that casinos exploit the mathematically challenged and the emotionally weak addicts and thrill seekers, it’s an ugly thing to witness day after day, but I can still see that the casino is offering those comps to normal losing players. When a card counter actually uses those comps they’re building up, they’re taking something they know wasn’t meant for them, and I think it’s unethical.
Now, is it unethical, for example, to live as a con artist who cons con artists who prey on regular people if you only con unethical con artists? Interesting question. The answer is almost certainly yes, because all your money comes from the same people the bad con artists are getting it from. You aren’t contributing anything to the system other than payback to the con artists who prey on regular people. But basically, by preying on them, you’re just collecting the money they take from good people.
