Blackhawks Edge Out Canadiens in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Chicago, IL – October 28, 2023 – In a highly anticipated matchup between two Original Six franchises, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in overtime at the United Center on Saturday night. Rookie sensation Connor Bedard played a pivotal role, scoring the game-winning goal just 1:22 into the extra period.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams exchanging leads. Montreal struck first with a power-play goal from Nick Suzuki in the opening period, but Chicago responded with two quick goals from Tyler Johnson and Philipp Kurashev. The Canadiens fought back in the second, with Cole Caufield tying the game before Sean Monahan gave Montreal a 3-2 lead late in the period.

The Blackhawks pushed hard in the third, and their efforts paid off when veteran forward Corey Perry netted the equalizer with just under seven minutes remaining, forcing overtime.

In the extra frame, Bedard—the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft—showcased his elite skill, weaving through defenders before firing a wrist shot past Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault to seal the victory.

'These are the moments you dream about,' Bedard said post-game. 'Montreal’s a great team, and to get the win in front of our fans is special.'

Blackhawks goaltender Arvid Söderblom made 32 saves, while Montembeault stopped 28 shots in the losing effort.

The win moves Chicago to 4-3-1 on the season, while Montreal falls to 3-4-1. Both teams will meet again on December 23 in Montreal.
