In certain Turkish communities other Sufi orders (the Halveti - Jerrahi and some of the Rifaʽi) have incorporated significant Alevi influence. Ishikism (Işıkçılık), is a new syncretic religious movement among Alevis who have developed an alternative understanding of Alevism and its history.
In April 2023 Turkish presidential candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu made waves when he announced on social media, " Ben Alevi'yim —I'm an Alevi." Until that moment, being Alevi carried a stigma for many people in Turkey. For Kılıçdaroğlu, his video was a celebration of pluralism in Turkish society. But what is an Alevi anyway?
Like other racialised communities across the globe, Alevi communities in Turkey have experienced racism as a punitive mechanism that encompasses various forms of collective punishment, ranging from affective, everyday forms of punishment to more concrete acts of physical violence that include lynchings, pogroms, massacres and genocidal violence.

The Turkish state's systemic discrimination against Alevis, which has been recognized by the European Court of Human Rights, includes the forced enrolment of Alevi children in mandatory Sunni religious education and non-recognition of Alevi places of worship and belief which impedes equal access to state resources.
The name Alevi sometimes appears in English as Alawi, Alawite, Alouite, or Alevi-Bektashi. Alevi faith and culture is called Alevism (Alevilik). Finding objective and easily-understood material about Turkish Alevis in a language other than Turkish is very difficult.

The theory is that turkic nomads held on to their pre Islamic beliefs (which they mostly did in a syncretic way) and merged Islamic Shia Ideas with local Christian ones and their spiritual gnostic shamanist beliefs. I myself had Alevi of once, fascinating religion. Pretty interesting!
