For the second year running, the Tampa and St. Petersburg areas have a telephone directory just for African-Americans.
DeVerger Systems Inc. has unveiled its second Tampa/St. Petersburg Metropolitan Black Pages. The directory, which lists businesses and professionals of color in the area, is designed to get African-Americans help in a hurry.
Derrick DeVerger, president of the company, his wife, Cynthia, who is vice president, secretary and treasurer, and sister Pamela, who is the public relations manager, are distributing 20,000 160-page books around the community.
Patterned on Black Pages around the country (more than 80 belong to the National Association of Black Pages), the Tampa Bay version has been in design for nearly a year.
"Everyone seems to be pleased," DeVerger said. "We've gotten a lot of calls from people saying, "We want to be in your book.'
A good number off the new listings are cold hard sales. DeVerger said he and others have walked the streets and knocked on a lot of doors to get folks involved.
This year's version is 20 percent larger and designed a little differently. The cover has 20 professionals from around the bay area. Inside is an alphabetical listing of companies that is separate from the directory. A new help section guides readers to community resources.
While the Tampa Bay version of the directory is two years old, DeVerger has put out the Asheville (N.C.) Area Black Pages for three years. He and his wife are looking for a home in the bay area and plan to move their operations here, said Pamela DeVerger, who has lived in the Tampa Bay area.
Now that the 1993-94 Black Pages is on the street, DeVerger is ready to plan for next year's directory. "We want to separate the Pinellas and Hillsborough stuff to make it easier," he said.

Kamara Crawford says there is no shortage of talent in the Tampa Bay area. She should know. She and her husband, Oliver, put together the Urban Jam Convention.
Fourteen groups will compete in the convention for a grand prize of $2,500 of studio time and a demo record. The opportunity to put together a record is one most artists can't pass up as they try to get national recognition.
The 5-year-old Urban Jam Convention is designed to give local artists a shot at being heard and seen by record industry officials.
"We have people coming from all over," said Crawford, who heads the Urban Jam staff. Oliver Crawford is president and convention host. "We had one person come from New Jersey, David Tillman. He'll be competing at the convention."
The last showcase July 17 gave 17 singing and rap acts the chance to compete in front of recording industry and celebrity judges. Seven acts were chosen to appear in the convention. Seven acts also were chosen in January to appear in the convention. Each group paid a one-time fee to compete in the showcases and convention.
Everyone who participates in a showcase will get a certificate. Winners also are given trophies.
Some of this year's competitors include Kadence, a three-woman act from Gainesville; Bubble Gum & Candy; and Nikki Floyd, a local singer.
Crawford said the convention provides more than just an opportunity for local talent to be seen. It attracts industry people and provides time and experience to novice entertainers one-on-one. Roughly 300 people will attend the convention.
In addition to panel discussions about the industry, the convention offers a banquet, talent show and concert by a Florida musical artist. The convention costs $50 for the weekend; the banquet is $20 per person.
The showcases and the convention are held at the Ramada Inn-Stadium, 4732 N Dale Mabry Highway. For information, call 963-1170.
Learning about African-American history in the Tampa Bay area just got easier. The University of South Florida's Library recently completed microfilming almost 50 years of Florida Sentinel Bulletins.
Sonja Garcia, assistant director of the library, said for years faculty and students interested in taking a closer look at the lives of black people in Tampa have wanted to have the Sentinel Bulletin at their disposal.
"What attracted us to this particular project was that only in this paper was African-American life chronicled here," Garcia said. "This is the only place that it was recorded."
The library, in turn, took apart the more than 100 bound volumes of the newspaper dating back to 1945, photographed it and rebound the volumes. Now there are two microfilm copies of the originals, one on the second floor of the Tampa campus library and another archival copy.
One thing that attracted Garcia to the microfilm project was that the Sentinel Bulletin had the only full set of newspapers for posterity. "If anything happened to that office, all of that history would be lost," she said.
Library official approached Sentinel Bulletin publisher C. Blythe Andrews Jr. about the project nearly two years ago. He allowed the library to do the work and Tammi Wilds, an electrical engineering student and student assistant at the library, took a special interest in the project, Garcia said.
Over the next 15 to 18 months, Wilds supervised the transfer of the material to microfilm. The material was ready for students and faculty members this summer. The bound volumes of the Sentinel Bulletin have been returned to the newspaper.
Garcia said she is proud of the library's acquisition. "This information will be here for generations to come."
African-American Elan is a look at the people, organizations and events in the black community of Tampa and Hillsborough County. Members of the community are invited to deliver or mail their news to Tanara Bowie, Community Times, 1000 N Ashley Drive, Suite 700, Tampa, FL 33602, or fax it to her at 226-3381. Deadline for the news is seven working days before the event. All events must be open to the public.
