An Earth exploratory ship, the USS Palomino, discovers a black hole with a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, just outside its event horizon. Deciding to solve the mystery of the Cygnus are: the Palomino's Captain, Dan Holland; his First Officer, Lieutenant Charlie Pizer; journalist Harry Booth; scientist and ESP-sensitive Dr. Kate McCrae, whose father was the Cygnus's First Officer; Dr. Alex Durant, the expedition's civilian leader; and the robot known as V.I.N.CENT. The Palomino attempts a dangerous fly-by of the darkened ship. As they come within close range of it, the buffeting they experience (due to the black hole's gravity) suddenly ceases. They bring more instruments to bear on the derelict, but do not even realize the gravity-free zone is artificial; slipping outside it, they are almost drawn into the black hole, an abyss from which no one can escape. Matters worsen when Reinhardt holds the crew captive, after realizing that they can help him reach his goal. The squad must now figure out a way to flee from Reinhardt -- before it's too late.

"Haunting" is exactly the term for it. I know others have knocked the silly robots and laser guns. But I have always felt The Black Hole's spooky emotional impact, through the visuals and music. Although the visuals are now dated, what they were aiming for strikes true. It's a vision of the future that strikes a chord in me: dark uncaring space, the black hole a crushing force more powerful than the sun, ego and insane genius, science and what's beyond science, the horror of the old crew's fate. The music with its heavy repeated theme is like the crushing presence of the black hole itself: relentless. A new God if ever there was one. In my opinion it has more emotional impact than Solaris, which threw in too much "murder mystery" and sort of confused me. The Black Hole is simple: it is clearly beyond knowledge and all the spookier for it. If you get a thrill from the idea of scientific discovery, give this underrated film a chance. You won't be disappointed.
Though Disney Studios had certainly explored the realm of fantasy in their features and short films, their first venture into science fiction was this 1979 release The Black Hole. I'm not sure that if Walt Disney were alive the studio would have made a feature like this. Not that it's the best science fiction I've ever seen, the influence 2001 A Space Odyssey is plain for anyone to see on viewing The Black Hole. But it has some interesting aspects. And there's a bit of Star Wars in this one as well. There's a pair of R2D@ robots here only they don't just chirp and squeak. They are voiced quite eloquently by Roddy McDowell and Slim Pickens. Now there's a combination I never thought to at least hear on the big screen. They're the best in the film. Next best is Maximilian Schell who is a scientist in the tradition of Dr. Mengele. He's the only functioning human on board a large space ship that's parked near a Black Hole in space. It's a ship reported missing and another ship has come in search of it. The crew of the search vessel is staffed by Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine, and Anthony Perkins. Perkins is a scientist who shows some strains of The Nutty Professor. He treats Schell like a colleague, but he ain't like any other colleague he's ever had. As for Borgnine he's a newspaper reporter. Now 1979 was before the internet and if the film were done today he'd be an internet blogger. I doubt that print newspapers will exist by the time next century rolls around when this set. The Black Hole won the Magic Kingdom a couple of Oscar nominations for technical categories. But while it's decent entertainment it breaks no grounds in science fiction.
Yes The Black Hole may have some silly dialogue and uneven acting, excepting Maximillian Schnell who is absolutely brilliant, but it is a very underrated film in my opinion. I love the story, it was an intriguing idea and it was compelling and moved at a good pace. The ending is wonderfully haunting and surreal, the direction is secure and the film's villain is one of the memorable ones I have seen in a while, twisted, tormented yet with a touch of humanity about him too. I did connect to the characters, yes even VINCENT and BOB. But what makes The Black Hole are the production values and music. The special effects, cinematography, design of the robots and set/scenery design are absolutely breathtaking and the score from the late legendary John Barry compliments the film perfectly. All in all, a very underrated film. 8/10 Bethany Cox
And it`s look like the one they discovered
LOL, this is a "black hole" in the Disney's company budget. TL;DR a stupid SF for retarded.
Saw this in the theatre as a child, the only thing I remember is the big-eyed floating robots. Thanks for uploading, now I finally get a second look at this mysterious film!
Thank you Freeman! Ive loved this movie since it came out.
Is this the full version with the fanfare at the beginning?

it was too hard on the eyes; as the other reviewer stated, kinda a star wars wannabe, esp with the lasers and flashing lights. and yes, dante's inferno. really ??? who thought of that

and unrealistic also. the story was weak. the saddest part is that all the people on that set are no longer with us

it did make me stop and think that with the conservation of angular momentum, how can anything be trapped in a black hole; it seems like anything going toward it would slingshot around, unless it's trajectory is a straight line to the center

Upsides: Great visuals, memorable spaceship designs, good performances by good actors ... great scene chewing by Maximilan Schell.
Downsides: Spaceship interiors dated, weak plotting, slow pacing, famously weak and bewildering ending.

This is a movie that was made by Disney back when everyone thought they needed to cash in on the late 1970s SF media fad that Star Wars catalyzed. The movie was designed by committee and it shows. It has a quirky sort of charm however that's turned it into something of a minor cult movie: its cast includes such movie lumiaries as Anthony Perkins and Maximilan Schell; the rest of the cast turn in solid, relatable performances. Roddy McDowall's and Slim Pickens's uncredited voicing of the droids V.I.N.CENT and Old B.O.B. steal every scene they're in.

Due to the poduction design the SF set seems almost steampunk, and the weak story make the film feel like it's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea in space, except for the ending where it's trying to coxplay 2001: A Space Odyessey crossed with Inferno. And if you are any fan of any sort of attempt at accuracy in scientific depicitons, this film may well make you furiously angry, with spaceships that embark on interstellar missions with no mention of FTL travel, explosive venting of atmosphere to space only where it serves the plot, an improbably-enourmous gossamer of a starship that somehow holds together even after being swiss-cheesed by a meteor storm and a black hole that's more of an unstoppered drain than an any sort of actual singularity.

Indeed, the movie is what might result if a three-way collision happened between a Gilbert and Sullivan play, a pulp SF Short story, and a Jules Vern Novel and they were able to save it at the emergency room only by amputating the musical numbers.

Still, where it worked it was memorable; the special effects were in their way pioneering, the spaceship designs original and memorable, and the whole atmosphere of the movie intriguing. This was also before Disney owned popular culture and still had to try, so the bravery required to push this flick out is something which must be admired.

There is something beguiling about this flim, despite its huge flaws, and I love it so.

It was Disney's first live action flick that was rated PG. I saw it during its theatrical run when I was 13. Really enjoyed it, and bought the soundtrack album soon after; John Barry scores another winner with this evocative (and at times fittingly melancholy) music.
Many thanks for sharing this film. For a little while I'm a teen again.

Thanks so much for posting this. I was 7 when this movie came out....and I love it just as much today as when I first seen it. AWESOME UPLOAD!!!!!!!!

In St. Louis, the scientists Dr. William Hauser, Shannon Muir and Kent accidentally create a black hole during an experiment. While investigating the phenomenon, Dr. Hauser and Kent die and the army comes to their laboratory under the command of General Ryker. Shannon tries to call the prominent Dr. Eric Bryce, but the scientist does not answer the phone since he misses his daughter Kayley after the divorce to his ex-wife Elizabeth. When he is contacted, he comes to the laboratory and soon he finds that the experiment has also unleashed a creature that feeds off energy. The Powers That Be wants a nuclear attack against the creature, but Eric warns that the action will increase the black hole. He also believes that the creature may be destroyed and the black hole closed if they are attracted to each other. However, only General Ryker supports his theory while General Tate wants to bomb the location.

Scientists accidentally create a black hole in St Louis and want to destroy it before it consumes East St. Louis which I thought was the plan. Only Judd Nelson and Kristy Swanson can save us from the military preventing using nuclear weapons. Also, there is a giant dyno-man monster that came through the black hole, Characters were boring. They attempted to create a story with a daughter and ex-wife. Folks stand around and watch the hole grow.
THE BLACK HOLE is the usual nonsense science fiction TV movie that was made for the Sci Fi Channel. This one features Kristy Swanson, best known as the actress who originally played BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER in the unsuccessful film made years before the TV series came along, revamped the idea, and was wildly successful. This film sees experimental scientists managing to create their own mini black hole, only to put the world in danger when a monster comes through it. It's ridiculous as it sounds, and pretty pitiful even by the standards of this genre. The film is chock-full of cheesy CGI effects and the creature is rendered invisible which gives it an odd, FORBIDDEN PLANET-style look. The acting is noticeably worse than even in this sub-genre of films, and the characters are so poorly-written as to be
