I'm pretty squeamish, so I didn't want to do this. I also didn't want to waste my time on voodoo magic audio sticks and the like. After much hemming and hawing I went for it and got one of these traps. I couldn't figure why I would even HAVE a gopher. My yard is bare. Literally bare. Dirt. Rocks. There is no plant life for this guy to eat. What the heck is he tearing up my yard for? I let it go for nearly a year now, but I just had the yard tilled and irrigation installed. I'm growing a yard, and I'm putting in plants, I can't have a gopher anymore. Surely the tilling of the yard would be enough to send him off to greener pastures? Yeah, no. He had made up his mind: my bare, fruitless yard was his playground, now and forever. And so did he force me to resort to this unseemly violence. And gruesome it is, too - but effective. I put it in the ground and two days later, well, see the title of this review. It works, and that's unfortunately exactly what I needed. Five stars. I hope I don't have to do it again, but at least now I know I have the upper hand. Edit: I spoke of the gopher as if it were one. Oh, what that it were so! I'm THREE dead gophers in now, and this last one broke the trap. The trigger paddle broke off the shaft while I was attempting to extract what seemed more like a small cat than a freaking gopher. I believe the gopher was CHEWING THROUGH THE SHAFT the moment he got owned. It seems obvious, then, that the trigger mechanism needs to be metal, like my gophers (rock and roll wooooo). Ask me how much I care about the broken trap. Not even a tiny little bit. I'm buying another, these things WORK. Oh and I won't wait the two weeks it will take for signs of more gophers to show up. They're there. You should see how fat and happy these things are. They're eating SOMETHING - even if it isn't my yard, and I'm betting there's a TON of them. I can feel it in my bones. It's going to be a never-ending dead gopher parade. Too bad I'm not a sociopath, I might actually be enjoying this. :( Second Edit: After becoming somewhat of a gopher killing superhero, I would like to add for those of you who are squeamish like me: this trap obviously kills the gophers very, very quickly. I have NEVER found one mobile in any way once the trap is sprung. As regards its effectiveness: only once has the trap sprung with nothing in it. Also... it's not as horrifying as you initially imagine it's going to be. Only about the last third of the gopher is visible. Getting the gopher out of the trap takes some doing (a lot of shaking, basically) - but there's never any blood or guts. I know this is probably cold comfort, but I thought I would add it. Third edit: I had a peaceful two years but one has come back and the trap is as effective as ever. I am hoping I will get another two years. Fourth edit: nope. Fifth edit: I am not sure what has happened, but my gophers appear to have evolved the ability to recognize this unit. For several years now (it's 2018) I have not killed a single gopher. All attempts to do so result in the gopher pushing dirt into the unit until it snaps. I end up with a black hole filled with dirt and what I assume is a gopher laughing raucously at my pitiful attempts to kill it. I have washed the unit, handled it with doctor's gloves to make sure there is no scent - nothing helps. After several years and many dead gophers, this unit is basically useless. I have resorted to gassing the gophers with GIANT KILLER sticks, which keeps them away, sometimes for several months, sometimes for a couple weeks. This traps rocks and it saved me $200 (going rate for a trapper around here). I received the Black Hole yesterday, read the brief instructions, watched some Youtube videos and set the trap about two hours ago. Came back to check on it and the dang gopher packed a bunch of dirt into it and pushed it out away from the entrance of the tunnel. I think light was seeping in between the trap and tunnel since I didn't put too much dirty around the seam. I set it in place once again and placed a lot more loose soil around the edge where the product was pushed up against the tunnel. Went to fly my Dromida Ominus quadcopter (Christmas present to myself bought on Amazon) just feet away and 5 minutes later I heard something snap. Wishful thinking was that the trap caught something, but I assumed it was some other random noise. Walked up to the hole and saw the trap moving around. Really, success already? Pulled the trap away from the tunnel and there it was, a gopher, the source of my grief, and a torn up lawn, for months. Sweet! My suggestions: - Buy two. When you dig for the tunnel you probably wont hit the actual end. You'll probably see one tunnel opening on both sides of your hole. If the gopher is coming the wrong way it can't enter the trap. So having two allows you to set them almost back to back and not have to worry about which direct the gopher is traveling through the tunnel. I plan to buy a second one right away since I only bought one. However, DON'T push their back sides against each other. The small round hole needs to allow light to enter the tunnel. - Look at the instructions and youtube videos so you understand how to set the trap. - Don't close off the small round hole at the end of the trap! It's designed to throw light and wind into the tunnel so the gopher comes to investigate and attempt to seal the opening to their tunnel. - I inserted a piece of carrot through the small round opening after putting the trap in i
