This is the MIT computer scientist whose algorithm led to the first real image of a black hole.
Katie Bouman, 29, has devoted years to the galactic quest and on Wednesday — when the first image of a black hole and its fiery halo was released — social media users pushed for her to get her due.
“Congratulations to Katie Bouman to whom we owe the first photograph of a black hole ever. Not seeing her name circulate nearly enough in the press,” wrote Twitter user Tamy Emma Pepin. “Amazing work. And here’s to more women in science (getting their credit and being remembered in history).”
By Wednesday evening, Bouman’s name was trending nationally on Twitter.
In a moment of great gravity, the world on Wednesday...
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that Bouman should take her “rightful seat in history.”
“Congratulations and thank you for your enormous contribution to the advancements of science and mankind,” she tweeted. “Here’s to #WomenInSTEM!,” which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Both MIT and the Smithsonian also tweeted to laud Bouman’s achievements.
“3 years ago MIT grad student Katie Bouman led the creation of a new algorithm to produce the first-ever image of a black hole,” MIT’s Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab tweeted. “Today, that image was released.”
Bouman, who posted a photo on Facebook of her reaction to seeing her work come to fruition, responded modestly.
“No one of us could’ve done it alone,” she told CNN. “It came together because of lots of different people from many different backgrounds.”
While she was a graduate student at MIT, Bouman led the development of the algorithm that helped capture the first-of-a-kind image, working with a team from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the MIT Haystack Observatory. She also led testing over the last few years to verify the image.
She’s now an assistant professor of computing and mathematical sciences at the California Institute of Technology.

A high school senior named Abby is sitting during a class discussion in a planetarium with her boyfriend, Nick. Suddenly, she starts drooling blood and sputum from her mouth. At Princeton-Plainsboro, House orders the team to do an MRI. During the MRI, she hallucinates that she is getting sucked into a black hole. Many diagnosis attempts are thwarted by negative tests. While Nick proposes to Abby, she hallucinates a younger version of herself coercing her to "tell the secret." Moments later, she begins seizing.
As a last-ditch effort to diagnose her, House and his team use an experimental procedure called "cognitive pattern recognition" to map the unconscious thoughts of Abby. This yields images of outer space and what appears to be Abby's father who had died in a plane crash. Eventually House reveals that Nick's father, a food importer traveling around the world, contracted a Middle Eastern parasite which he then inadvertently transmitted to Abby sexually, triggering a cerebellar schistosomiasis delayed hypersensitivity allergy.
Meanwhile, Wilson attempts to furnish his new condo. He rents the furniture, much to the dismay of House, who returns the furniture. Then, Wilson is seen in a furniture store trying to buy furniture, but is unable to choose anything. Finally, he hires a decorator and fills the room with furniture, buying House a Hammond B-3 organ. House is pleased with the gift and plays "A Whiter Shade of Pale".
Throughout the episode Taub is having a marital issue. His wife is upset that he is not spending enough time with her. While at work, House takes Taub's phone and sexts with Taub's wife. Later, Taub and his wife make up. Taub proposes, getting down on one knee and giving his wife a diamond ring. When she points out that they're already married, Taub responds, "I want to be better at it." However, his fidelity to his wife is questioned once again when House sees him walking with an attractive nurse as the episode ends.

In November 2005, the message board of the Comics Journal reported that Black Hole would be adapted to film by the French director Alexandre Aja. In March 2006, comics news site Newsarama reported that Neil Gaiman and Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary would be adapting the screenplay.
In 2007, director Rupert Sanders released an abbreviated live-action adaptation of Black Hole on his website as part of his pitch for the project. It features actors Chris Marquette, Whitney Able, Diane Gaeta, Noel Fisher, and Nate Mooney.
In February 2008, Variety reported that the film would be produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by Academy Award-nominee David Fincher. In October 2008, MTV reported that scriptwriters Gaiman and Avary had left the production, reporting that their script would not be used by Fincher – though no replacement scriptwriter was announced. In August 2010, David Fincher also removed his name from production of the film in order to focus more attention on directing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, however as of October 2013 he was once more attached to direct Black Hole.
In March 2018, the project was revived when New Regency and Brad Pitt's production company Plan B own the rights to the film with Rick Famuyiwa attached to write and direct after making his Sundance hit, Dope.
