The known stellar mass black holes are part of binary systems. All black hole masses so far have been inferred statistically based on observations of binary systems, or supermassive black holes at the hearts of galaxies, such as Sgr A* or M87* . For the first time, astronomers may have come up with a precise mass measurement of an isolated black hole, floating through the Milky Way . The evidence has been gathered following six years of observations using the Hubble Space Telescope . The newly discovered object is about 5,000 light years away in the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way.
Stellar mass black holes are at least 20 times as massive as the Sun, and are born when giant stars explode in a supernova, leaving behind a dense stellar core that gets crushed under the influence of its own gravity. The detonation may not be perfectly symmetrical, catapulting the newly formed black hole through space. The discovery of the new object allows astronomers to estimate that the closest free-floating black hole to the Earth may be as close as 80 light years away.
The discovery opens up the possibility of studying populations of black holes in the galaxy, or their demographics, and better understanding the later stages of stellar evolution. The measurements were conducted at the very limits of the capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope. According to theoretical predictions, there may be 100 million free floating black holes in the Milky Way, that are difficult to detect as they do not emit light of their own. They do however, bend the light around them by an amount proportional to their masses.
Black holes do not emit light and cannot be imaged by conventional telescopes. However, light from stars behind it are distorted and amplified by the black hole, because of a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing. Einstein predicted in 1916 that the Sun would offset the apparent position of a background star because of the influence of its gravity. A collaboration of astronomers verified this effect in 1919, during a solar eclipse. The same principle is also used to hunt for extremely dense objects.

Astronomers monitor the skies continuously for sudden changes in brightness of stars, and when spotted, use the Hubble Space Telescope for follow-up observations to further investigate the source of variability. In 2011, Hubble began investigating a star that had momentary brightened. Two teams of scientists independently arrived at a conclusion that a very compact object was responsible for the gravitational lensing. Martin Dominik says , "Einstein did it again – black holes make themselves invisible, but they cannot hide their gravity. It was amazing to see how two observable signatures of the gravitational bending of light by the black hole matched up – the shift in position and an apparent brightening of the observed background star."
If the object was another dense stellar remnant like a pulsar, a neutron star or a white dwarf, it would have caused a change in the colour of the background star, because the light from both the objects would be blended together. However, astronomers found no changes to the colour of the light from the background star. The object also had a very intense gravitational field, dragging out the lensing event for 200 days. The Hubble was also able to image the deflection of the background star caused by the foreground object.
Astronomers estimate that the invisible, compact object is between 1.6 and 4.4 solar masses, with a black hole having to weigh over 2.2 solar masses. At the lower mass range, the object can be a neutron star. Neutron pressure within the cores prevents gravitational collapse of the neutron stars, which are just a step away from collapsing into black holes. The original star that exploded had to be at least 20 times as massive as the Sun. Jessica Lu says , "This is the first free-floating black hole or neutron star discovered with gravitational microlensing. With microlensing, we're able to probe these lonely, compact objects and weigh them. I think we have opened a new window onto these dark objects, which can't be seen any other way."
A bright, unrelated star close to the source star complicated the observations. Lead author on one of the papers describing the new object, Kailash Sahu says , "So it's like trying to measure the tiny motion of a firefly next to a bright light bulb. We had to meticulously subtract the light from the nearby bright star to precisely measure the deflection of the faint source." The team led by Sahu estimates that the object is travelling at 160,000 kilometres per hour, fast enough to make the trip from the Earth to the Moon within three hours. The object is travelling much faster than nearby stars.
When the black hole passed in front of the background star, which is located 19,000 light years away in the galactic bulge, the starlight was amplified for a duration of 270 days. For several years, astronomers investigated how the position of the background star appeared to have shifted because of the foreground object. Sahu says, "Astrometric microlensing is conceptually simple but observationally very tough. Microlensing is the only technique available for identifying isolated black holes."

The first stellar mass black holes were identified in 1970, but all the known objects in the class so far are part of binary systems. Gas from the companion star falling into the black hole is crushed and accelerated, heating it up and releasing X-rays. About two dozen X-ray binaries have black holes with mass estimates ranging from 5 to 20 solar masses. Researchers estimate that only one in a few hundred microlensing events are caused by isolated black holes, so finding them is a bit like searching for a needle in a haystack. Sahu says, "Detections of isolated black holes will provide new insights into the population of these objects in our Milky Way."
Dominik says, "We identified gravitational bending of light by a dark object of seven Solar masses in the Milky Way. It's an isolated stellar-mass black hole that failed to hide, and many others are set to fail as well in the near future."
Papers by the two teams describing the findings have been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal and The Astrophysical Journal Letters .
