The recent arrest of a homeless man, Basil Eleby, 39, has become an issue that is exposing a rift within the city of Atlanta. Eleby, who is mentally ill with the cognitive capacity of a child, was arrested last week and accused of smoking crack and starting the fire that made a section of a bridge collapse on the I-85 highway near downtown Atlanta. Investigators charged Eleby with first-degree arson and felony destruction of property based on the statements of two key witnesses. Although Eleby stated he left the area before the fire started, the witnesses’ account of the scene was enough for police to charge Eleby. Many feel that this is a significant issue as the witnesses against Eleby are a White crackhead couple.
Sophia Brauer and Barry Thomas both stated to investigators that they agreed to smoke crack that day with Eleby under the bridge. However, according to the couple, Eleby decided to smoke the crack all by himself and started the fire. Thomas is quoted as saying, “The guy came down there and he moved the chair from one spot to the next. He put the chair on top of the shopping cart. He reached up under the shopping car. I didn’t think anything about it, when I looked back I seen [sic] smoke coming out of the chair and I saw it up against that pipe … I panicked. I got scared and I started running. I hollered at her (Brauer), she jumped up and we went out to the highway.”
When investigators asked Thomas about Eleby, he stated, “I told them I don’t know if he’s crazy or not. I said but if he smokes crack he’s probably crazy .”
Thomas’ words are a telling statement coming from a self-confessed crackhead. If smoking crack makes you crazy, then why are police taking the word of a crackhead that Eleby was the one who started the fire? Think about it. Thomas and Brauer stated they were going to smoke crack together with Eleby but he decided he was going to consume it by himself. That means they could have been angry crackheads. You deny a crackhead an expected high and they can get evil. Is it so implausible that they could have started the fire out of revenge for not getting a hit on the crackpipe? On social media, people are saying all sorts of things about Eleby, but we are to assume these homeless, White crackheads are just innocent?
Thomas and Brauer were only charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass and allowed to leave the scene. Because the pair were not arrested at the scene there are no mug shot photos of the homeless, crackhead couple, but Eleby’s face is now representative of the Atlanta crackhead.

Just three weeks before NYU’s newest class moves into the area, a group of junkies and crackheads has turned a leafy pathway in Washington Square Park into an open-air drug den — and the NYPD is doing nothing about it.
As many as 20 strung-out vagrants have taken over several benches in the park’s northwest corner, where they openly consume hard drugs just steps from the children’s playground, outraged neighbors said.
One Village resident who walks his dog through the park daily said he has repeatedly witnessed people blatantly smoking crack — and even saw one man use a handheld mirror to inject narcotics into a vein in his neck as two cops sat in a cruiser about 15 feet away.
“I dunno if they have a Twitter feed or what, but the word is out and the numbers get bigger by the day,” said the resident, a 33-year-old property manager.
“I’ve lived by the park seven years and I have never in my life seen someone shooting heroin in the middle of broad daylight, literally surrounded by pedestrians enjoying an afternoon outside.”
Village resident Martin Felondo, 53, said he recently complained to a cop about being harassed by a dealer who followed him through the park, trying to sell him drugs.
“The cop just told me to calm down,” Felondo said.
Felondo also noted that he has frequented the park since 1987, adding: “I’ve seen trends come and go, and I’m not too keen on what’s going on with heroin.”
Will Falzon, who works as a building super nearby, said the situation was “really a safety concern, more than anything.
“The quality of people coming here and participating in that kind of activity aren’t the kind of people that a residential neighborhood needs. It’s not what you want to see,” said Falzon, 57.
Thursday afternoon, The Post spotted three people firing up a glass stem and puffing away on benches in the area.
Afterward, none would discuss what they had been doing.
About a half-dozen other apparent druggies were seen shuffling around like zombies and occasionally spewing curses at each other.
A Parks Department worker admitted that he and his colleagues had quit cleaning up the area because they were scared of the addicts.
“There’s drug use, prostitution, gambling — all that is going on there. All day and all night, too,” the worker said.
“In that area over there, though, it’s off the chain and the cops know what’s going on. I ain’t touching that situation. That’s on them.”
No cops were stationed inside the park Thursday, but at one point, two officers pulled up in a patrol car and parked at Washington Square North to eat salads in their vehicle.
Asked why they weren’t cracking down on the lawlessness within their sight, one cop said: “We aren’t even here for that specifically. There’s a unit that’s dealing with all of that. I can’t say more than that.”
An NYPD spokeswoman, Sgt. Jessica McRory, said: “The precinct has received complaints in regards to that area of the park. We currently have officers assigned to that area.
“The commanding officer [Deputy Inspector Joseph Simonetti] has contacted narcotic investigators to address the condition.”

The Biden administration is set to fund the distribution of crack pipes to drug addicts as part of its plan to advance “racial equity.”
The $30 million grant program , which closed applications Monday and will begin in May, will provide funds to nonprofits and local governments to help make drug use safer for addicts. Included in the grant, which is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, are funds for “smoking kits/supplies.” A spokesman for the agency told the Washington Free Beacon that these kits will provide pipes for users to smoke crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and “any illicit substance.”
HHS said the kits aim to reduce the risk of infection when smoking substances with glass pipes, which can lead to infections through cuts and sores. Applicants for the grants are prioritized if they treat a majority of “underserved communities,” including African Americans and “LGBTQ+ persons,” as established under President Joe Biden’s executive order on “advancing racial equity.”
What does a “safe smoking kit” include? So glad you asked:
Mouthpiece: This is the most important thing in the kit. A cut sparkplug fits nicely onto a stem. Using this prevents you from getting cut, burnt and infected lips and HCV exposures.
Rubber Bands: Wrap these around the end of the stem to prevent lip burns (be aware that with hear these occasionally melt and snap).
Triple Antibiotic Ointment: First Aid for sores. Do not use for burns.
Alcohol Wipes: Use these to clean mouthpieces and pipes, especially if you a are sharing equipment.
Antiseptic Towelettes : Use these to clean off our hands (and your John if you are doing sex work).
Chore Boy/Brio: Use this as a filter in the stem. After repeated heating choy becomes hot and brittle and can be sucked into your throat. This provides an opportunity for you to be exposed to diseases, especially during unprotected oral sex. Change out your choy often.
Screen: 1 inch screens are used as a filer in the stem. These are better than choy since they last longer.
Vitamin C & E: Vitamin C helps lessen fatigue and crashing. Vitamin E will help cuts, sores and burns heal.
Condoms (lubed and unlubed): Use lubed condoms for vaginal and anal sex, use unlubed for oral sex.
