How do student outcomes vary by ethnicity? Degree outcomes White graduates had the highest proportion gaining a first or upper second class degree, with 82 per cent. The group with the lowest proportion was black graduates, with only 60 per cent. For Asian graduates, the proportion gaining a first or upper second class degree was 72 per cent.
The data shows that: 36.1% of white graduates got a first class degree - the highest percentage out of all ethnic groups - followed by graduates with mixed ethnic backgrounds (31.3%) black graduates were the least likely out of all ethnic groups to get a first class degree (17.3%) 46.9% of white graduates and 45.4% of black graduates got an upper second class degree (2:1)
Earnings - Black graduates earn less than white, Asian and mixed-race graduates six months after graduating. 25% of black graduates earn above £25,000 compared to 38% of Asian graduates, and 30% of white graduates.
Students record their own ethnicity, either when they apply for a course or when they register with a higher education provider. The percentages are based only on students whose ethnicity was known (98% of first year undergraduate entrants and 97% of postgraduates in the 2020 to 2021 academic year). Methodology

The latest data shows that progress is being made: the gap between the percentage of white students and students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds awarded a First or a 2:1 in their degree has reduced by 4.4%, from 13.2% in 2017/18 graduates to 8.8% in 2020/21.
