Bitdeer Brings Ethiopia Into Its Global Crypto Infrastructure Network

Bitdeer Technologies Group has completed construction of a 60 megawatt bitcoin mining site in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, bringing 40 megawatts online while awaiting grid energization for the balance. It's a move that embeds the country into a global crypto infrastructure footprint exceeding 1600 megawatts and signals how energy rich frontier markets are being folded into capital intensive digital asset supply chains globally.

The expansion underscores operational bottlenecks tied to power delivery and equipment sequencing, with 20 megawatts stalled pending energization and phased ramp-up linked to proprietary SEALMINER shipments, even as Bitdeer’s December output surged to 636 bitcoins and its self-mining hash-rate climbed above 55 exa-hash. It reflects an aggressive pivot toward vertically integrated capacity and away from third-party rigs across operations globally.

Ethiopia’s inclusion alongside the United States, Norway and Bhutan places regulatory clarity and power pricing at the center of investor calculus, as governments weigh data center driven demand against grid stability. However, Bitdeer’s growing pipeline of more than 1300 megawatts suggests a long-term bet that emerging markets with surplus energy can anchor both crypto mining and adjacent high performance computing workloads regionally.
