LGBT+ issues have been a huge topic this past year. In October 2018, hit reality TV show Terrace House welcomed their first openly bisexual cast member Shunsuke Ikezoe . In February 2019, thirteen gay and lesbian couples sued the Japanese government in a bid to legalize same-sex marriage. In May of this year, the biggest lesbian bar in Tokyo got called out for refusing entry to a transgender woman at a women-only event. And in more positive news, at the beginning of this month, Ibaraki became the first prefecture in Japan to recognize same-sex partnerships .
With topics coming up more frequently than ever in the news, on TV shows, and even in everyday conversations, having a grasp of Japanese LGBT+ vocabulary is sure to come in handy. And if you’re a friend of Dorothy yourself, reviewing these terms before your next trip to a Japanese LGBT+ space will be great to help you describe your own identity and understand the various labels yourself.
While you might get by sometimes with simply saying English words in a katakana-like way (for example, “gay” translates pretty easily into ゲイ or gei ), saying the Japanese word ノンケ ( nonke ) will communicate to Japanese people that you’re actually straight much smoother than saying ストレート ( sutoreto ).
Let’s take a look at some of the general vocabulary first, then go down the list of LGBTQIA.

Japanese shows with mlm relationships.
Tutorial Lvl: Comedy = Very focused on jokes instead of relationships.
Lvl 1: Manga style = Very over the top acting/anime-reactions.
Lvl 2: Lowkey manga style = Less over the top acting/anime-reactions
Lvl 3: Realistic = Realistic relationship with very little anime-reacting or exaggerated reactions.
Lvl 4: LGBT mature = LGBT stories that show realistic gay relationships and usually with more mature scenes.
End Lvl: Yaoi/NSFW means ''Not Safe For Work'' or in other words explicit/not wholesome!!!! Don't watch if sensitive!! Can contain problematic themes.
A white blanket scene is a scene where the MLs just kinda lie down in white blankets with bare chests for the aesthetic. Its typical for older BLs.
Since pink films (~60 minute movies with explicit content) contain mostly explicit and/or problematic scenes I've decided to cut them out of this list.
Manga style BL, first part of a series of movies.
I'm not adding all those but you can find them all linked on the drama page.
So stereotypically manga that its funny.
Lowkey manga style, bit more explicit.
First part of a trilogy apparently. Find them linked on the page.
Its the ''Tsubasa no Kakera'' story.
WARNING! BL BAIT! It does have a gay character and cute scenes with his roommate but there is no couple formed.
They claim its a BL, its more yaoi though and contains r*pe so be warned!
Trigger warning: Has assault scene.
LGBT-movie, comedy, explicit, onesided love
Definitely a product of its time, don't watch if sensitive. Contains assault.
Check out the latter half of the series. There's an open ending to it though.
Lowkey manga style, Sad, Weird ending
Realistic, dark themes, sad, cheating
Realistic, Sad, Depressing, Violent
Kiss: Not the main character but others.
The movie keeps things vague and focused on their dance but may still be interesting to check out.
There are slight references of liking each other but not beyond that.
Trigger warning: Has assault scene.
VERY manga style, low quality, weird plotline
Problematic, deals with discrimination
Trigger warning: has assault scene.
LGBT-queer film about elderly characters.
Lowkey Manga style, onesided love, no relationship formed, death
Trigger warning: has assault scene
